Labor Department reported that the number of people filing first-time unemployment claims fell last week to 457,000, its lowest level since September 2008, analysts were expecting it to rise to 457,000. Analysts believe that a lot of that drop was due to unemployment offices being closed for the holidays, the key report to watch will be tomorrow's report on employment. Stocks were mixed today, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 101 points, the Nasdaq Composite Index fell 12 points and the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index fell 9 points. Bond prices fell, the yield on the benchmark 10-year note rose to 3.37 from 3.31 Wednesday, the dollar fell against other currencies. Gold prices continued to rise along with crude oil, Gold rose $5.20 to $1,218.20 an ounce, and oil fell $0.14 to $76.46 a barrel.

McDonald's reported that sales at U.S. stores open a year or more fell 0.6% in November, it marks the second monthly decline in a row. Dow component 3M issued a profit forecast for '10 that beats analysts' expectations, the company said '09 earnings would be somewhere between $4.50 to $4.55 per share, analysts' forecasted earnings to be around $4.57. Stocks fell today as the dollar gained strength against the euro, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 101 points, the Nasdaq Composite Index fell 16 points and the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index fell 12 points. Gold fell $20.60 to $1,143.40 and crude oil fell $1.31 to $72.62, bond prices rose, the yield on the benchmark 10-year note fell to 3.39 from 3.42 Monday.
