Slow motion trading activity for the typical Monday. Markets were heavy in negative territory, only to move deeper into the red zone, into the closing bell. Financial markets began the sell off but the negative sentiment was felt across the board. The rally seen last week came to a dead stop today.

Ctrip.com beat by $0.05, beat on rev; guides Q2 rev above consensus reports Q1 earnings of $0.26 per share, $0.05 better than the First Call consensus of $0.21.

(STEC) - buy
Stec earned $3 mln or 6 cents per share, up 61% from $1.8 mln or 4 cents per share, in the year-earlier period.

(NFP) - short
NFP reported Q1 2009 net loss of $515.8 mln, a loss of $12.59 per diluted share compared with net income of $8.5 mln or income of $0.21 per diluted share, in Q1 2008.

(SLG) - short
SL Green Rlty cut quarterly dividend to $0.10 versus $0.375 previously.

Cliffs Natural Resources will slash its dividend by more than half and is suspending its 401(k) contribution for all salaried personnel.

(BMC) - short
Q4 revenue of $479 mln miss Street view of $487 mln and cash flow per share at $1.06 vs Street view of $1.12.

Aegean Marine Petrol missed by $0.18, missed on rev, Q1 earnings of $0.10 per share, $0.18 worse than the First Call consensus of $0.28, rev fell 31.3% year/year to $365.4 mln vs. $485.6 mln consensus.

Significant decline in revenue and cites lower sales for weak Q1 forecast. 1Q sees adjusted earnings of 13 cents a share to 17 cents a share with analysts estimate or earnings at 31 cents a share.

WuXi PharmaTech got off to a good start with 2009 solid 1Q results and achieved 33% y/y growth in Laboratory Services revenues.

(MIDD) - short
Middleby beat by $0.16 and beat on revenues.

Zantrio.com Market Review for May 15, 2009

Options expiration today made for a difficult trading atmosphere today. By mid-afternoon it was apparent many traders bailed on the markets early and left the trading floor. Trading action was very whippy during the trading day, nothing like we have seen in recent days. Trading ranges were tight into the close of the trading week.

Zantrio.com Market Review for May 18, 2009

The markets ended the trading session sharply higher today, with triple digit gains. Trading action however, was muted with little action for the active traders. Ahead of the Memorial Day holiday coming up this weekend, it is likely traders will see a drop in trading volume. Traders are anxious to take advantage of the extended holiday weekend to enjoy time with their family and friends.

A very sluggish trading session throughout the day creating confusion for traders in the market. A mixed closing to the session with the DOW posting a loss with others posting slight gains. Economic data released today shows a continued trend of a gloomy housing market. New housing starts set an all new record low since records were kept in the 1950's.
