Egypt’s status quo sends signal of hope to Iraq
Iraqis following the case of corrupt officials who ruled Egypt and plundered its economy in three decades, must feel very happy because these officials today have nowhere to go with their money and no haven to seek.
Their happiness is based on the hope that one day the Iraqi people will have the chance, like their Egyptian brethren, to chase the thieves who have plundered the country and turned it into ruins where black crows have their nests.
Iraqis entertain the hope that their plundered wealth will return to them and those responsible for the shedding of innocent blood will be brought to account.
The whole world is cooperating with Egypt today. The level of cooperation is as good as during the reign of former President Mubarak, but it is working on an opposite direction.
Egypt is endowed with massive human and material resources, but they were utilized only to serve the governing elites and their lackeys.
We have read and heard of ‘conclusive evidence’ of corruption in which officials at different levels of government have been involved, but we have seen no action. The evidence was not circumstantial. It was provided by the Iraqi parliament and the transparency commission.
There is a lot of talk of corruption in Iraq, emanating from inside and outside the country. But the talk and evidence have been discarded and corruption has continued unabated.
Nothing moves in Iraq without corruption. Corruptions is today the means for promotions and holding of public position.
It is time for the Iraqi parliament to pass legislation with clear mechanism that will hold the prime minister or any other official to account.
Leaving the fight against corruption to the government means neglecting a fundamental fact: the government itself is the fertile ground for corruption.
