1,500 Police Fired In Iraqi Province

January 29, 2007 -- Some 1,500 police officers in Iraq's Diyala Governorate and the mayor of the provincial capital, Ba'qubah, have been fired.


Provincial police chief Ghanim al-Qureyshi said on January 28 that the officers fled rather than fight when Ba'qubah was attacked by insurgents in November 2006.

He also said Mayor Khalid al-Senjeri was suspected of collaborating with Sunni insurgents. Al-Qureyshi took over police operations in the volatile province northeast of Baghdad after his predecessor was sacked last month.

Meanwhile, British Defense Secretary Des Browne arrived in Baghdad for an unannounced visit on January 28.

The British Defense Ministry said Browne is scheduled to meet Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and President Jalal Talabani to assess progress on the ground.

British forces have turned over to Iraqis security responsibility for two of the four southern provinces they controlled.

Armenia Sends New Rotation Of Troops To Iraq

Armenia on Saturday sent a fresh contingent of troops to serve in the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq.

The 46 servicemen were to rotate in for the same number of troops deployed since July, the Defense Ministry said.

The Armenian troops have been deployed to Iraq since January 2005, and parliament voted in December to extend the deployment for another year. The contingent serves under Polish command.

The mission has been met with criticism from opposition parties, many Armenians and even the 30,000-strong Armenian community in Iraq, which fears being targeted by attacks. President Robert Kocharian and his government have sought to portray the deployment as a way to boost ties with Europe.

An Iraqi official here Sunday called on Iran's private sector to invest in projects to develop his country's infrastructure.


The consul general of the Iraqi consulate in the western Iranian province of Kermanshah, Riyadh Hassoun, made the call during a meeting with an Iranian delegation comprising representatives of Ilam province's Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Mines.

Iran has a huge potential for providing appropriate services and raising exports of needed commodities to Iraq particularly through border provinces such as Ilam, he said.

He praised the increased security at Mehran international border point and called for an end to the export of non-standard goods to Iraq via this border point.

Iraq welcomes cooperation with Iran in the commercial and economic fields and visits of Iranian pilgrims to Iraqi holy sites as well as efforts to secure its joint borders with Iran, he said.

Hassoun stressed that bilateral relations in the economic, cultural and tourism areas would contribute to strengthening of security and improvement of economic structures of the two states.

The head of the Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Mines of Ilam province, Mohsen Chamanara, expressed the province's readiness to expand its non-oil exports to Iraq via the Mehran international border and strengthen infrastructure of Iraq's border markets.

Ilam, which has a 430-km joint border with Iraq, has become a main gateway for pilgrims visiting Iraqi holy sites and export of Iranian commodities to Iraq due to the province's relatively secure situation and its proximity to Iraq's holy sites, he said.

He urged establishment of an Iranian consulate in Ilam taking into account the trend toward increasing travel by Iranian pilgrims to Iraq and exchange of visits by the two countries' traders.

Talabani reveals plans for 3-way committee on Iraq

By Mohammad Al-Ghazzi BAGHDAD, Jan 29 (KUNA) -- Iraqi President Jalal Talabani on Monday revealed that a three-way committee representing the US, Iran and Iraq would be formed soon to fight terrorism.

Talabani, who was speaking in the Iraqi capital during a joint press conference with visiting UK Defence Minister Des Browne, said "Our Iranian brothers have expressed readiness to work alongside US and Iraqi soldiers in order to fight terrorism." He added he was optimistic of the possibility of such a breakthrough taking place.

He stressed that all Iraqi factions represented in the cabinet supported the security plan for Baghdad in a bid to achieve security and safety for the capital.

Browne, for his part called for a government of national unity "where all the factions are represented." He also called for letting the Iraqis "assume control of the law and order issue in their own country." "We are here to provide support to the security scheme," the minister said.

The talks between Talabani and Browne was attended by Iraqi deputy Speaker Barham Saleh and the Head of the Kurdistani Coalition at the NA Fuad Maasoum.

IDP officials confirmed that Iraq's Minister of Science and Technology, Minister of Communications and Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research will be among top Iraqi officials who will attend the conference.

Do you really think that Bush is gonna let Iran's imperial guards put there guns next to our troops to fight terrorist when THEY ARE the terrorists!!?? Talabani is NUTS! With all the sanctions against Iran...and our troops mounting...warning Iran to NOT interfer in Iraq....Yah, sure This kind of stupidity makes me infuriated What a political chess game. If Bush refuses the idea then he looks like the instigator against peace. Iran can then turn it against him and play the humble "we are the good guys" card. How can Iraq even consider this when Iran HATES the US and have formed a liberation fund to support countries that want to get out from under the domination of the US. Aint gonna happen!
