Iraqi parliament meets after two days of attacks
15 April 2007 (Voices of Iraq)

The Iraqi parliament held a session on Saturday after two days of deadly attacks that claimed the lives of dozens and wounded hundreds others, including one that ripped through a cafeteria where the legislators were having lunch inside Baghdad's green zone.
Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, who announced the postponement of Saturday's session to Sunday, appealed to all members to "unite for the sake of saving Iraq."
"We have lost a martyr (Abu Waddah) but we do not want to lose the biggest thing, which is Iraq, and so I call on you to unite to save Iraq, which is suffering from the south to the north," said Mashhadani.
Thursday's bombing inside the Iraqi parliament claimed the life of Parliament Member Mohammed Awad (alias Abu Waddah) and 20 employees.
Member of Parliament Bahaa al-Aaraji of the Shiite Unified Iraqi Coalition (UIC), the largest bloc in the Iraqi parliament, held the parliamentary speakership board responsible for the bombing.
Aaraji called for handing over security responsibilities to parliamentary blocs commensurate with their sizes.
He considered the setting up of a cafeteria inside the parliament was one of the causes of "the security breach." Addressing the parliament speaker, Aaraji said "we should not entrust our souls in your hands."
Replying to Aaraji's accusations, Mashhadani, a Sunni Muslim, said "the parliament speakership board is responsible for the bombing, but you are responsible too because you helped breach security."
"Everyday I was receiving complaints against members of parliament refusing to be inspected," said Mashhadani, adding "there will be new security measures that will be debated inside a closed session."
The gates of the conference hall and parliament saw stricter security measures compared to the measures before Thursday's bombing.
Meanwhile, Saturday's session witnessed a postponement of the first reading of a draft law on confiscation of money and property that belonged to the former regime after the debaathification committee objected on the grounds that the measure is one of its own responsibilities.

    Iraq cleric 'in Cabinet walkout'

Moqtada Sadr's political group has six cabinet ministers

Officials close to radical Iraqi Shia cleric, Moqtada Sadr, have said he will withdraw his Cabinet ministers from the government coalition on Monday.
Moqtada Sadr's political bloc has six ministers in Prime Minister Nouri Maliki's government.
The lawmakers said the move was an attempt to pressure Mr Maliki to draw up a timetable for US troops to leave.
Mr Maliki has refused to set any timetable, insisting a withdrawal is based on the conditions on the ground.
Last week, tens of thousands attended a rally in the Shia city of Najaf organised by Mr Sadr to protest against the continued presence of US-led troops in Iraq.
    Earlier walkout
"We will announce our withdrawal from the government tomorrow," Sadr group lawmaker Saleh Hassan Issa al-Igaili told AFP news agency.
Sadr's bloc has 32 lawmakers in the country's 275-member government. Only the cabinet ministers will resign.
The move is likely to create further tensions in Mr Maliki's Shia-dominated government of national unity, but is unlikely to lead to its collapse, analysts say.
Anti-US cleric Moqtada Sadr has previously staged a similar temporary withdrawal. In January, his bloc ended a two-month boycott of parliament to protest against the continuing closeness of the relationship between Mr Maliki and the US administration. Moqtada Sadr's Mehdi Army has been described by the US as the greatest threat to security in Iraq.
