Momentum is picking up. Liked the Kuwait article posted earlier. Get debt forgiveness from them and Saudi before IC and a passed HCL which may be voted on within next 3 days and we'll never have looked so close. As stated earlier the IC will not go ahead without a passed HCL, the UN/IC have made that a 'condition'. And countries would be reluctant to invest their money without a back up in place like the HCL. So IF it is delayed we will know the HCL is not passed. Be very surprised if they delay it again. Piss a lot of people/countries off at a time they need support/help/money.
Zubaidi:Monetary value of the Iraqi dinar must revert to the previous level, or at least to acceptable levels as it is in the Iraqi neighboring states.

Shabibi:The bank wants as a means to affect the economic and monetary policy by making the dinar a valuable and powerful.

Kurds see strategic interest in security crackdown
    By Basil Adas, Correspondent

Arbil: Bodybags have been arriving at regular intervals into this key town in the Kurdish held area of Iraq.

Ever since the new security plan for Baghdad kicked in a few months ago the number of dead of Kurdish Peshmerga fighters have been rising.

More than 5,000 Peshmerga fighters have been recruited after the announcement of security plan and they form the bulk of forces leading the drive against insurgents in Baghdad.

"We fought vigorously the former regime and martyred thousands, so we are always ready to fight and sacrifice, therefore we don't consider this task as a shock," Farhad Esmail, Peshmerga officer, told Gulf News.

"It is the continuation of the long and arduous clashes we have gone through. We believe in combat and we consider ourselves part of a united democratic federal Iraq."

But not all share the enthusiasm of Farhad. Umm Shirzad, a Kurdish mother says it is a difficult life.

"We had a long struggle with Saddam Hussain's regime, we were the target of genocide in Halabja and the Anfal operations. After the end of our battle and establishing our stable territory, we rejoiced," she told Gulf News. "My son is deployed in Baghdad. The security situation is troublesome there and I believe that his life is exposed to dangers every day," she said.

"I am more anxious and frightened especially after the return of the four Peshmerga martyrs. God willing, our sons will return safe and peace prevails in Baghdad and all the Iraqi cities".

    Security

In most of the Kurd-controlled regions of Iraq like Arbil, Dohuk and Sulaymania, the Peshmerga brigades continue training hard in order to deal with any state of emergency.

The commanders say the fighters have to be ready for any serious eruption of sectarian strife in Baghdad or a massive US troop withdrawal which could lead to chaos.

"It is true that Kurdistan is a secure region, but we are convinced that its stability is hinged on Iraq's security as a whole," Fadhil Merani, the Kurdistan Democratic Party secretary, told Gulf News. "Also the Kurds' strategic interest lies in restoring order and peace throughout Iraq. It will guarantee the security of Kurdistan territory. Therefore, we are actively involved in fighting terrorism," Merani added. Kurdistan is witnessing unprecedented peace and security in its history and has large rebuilding campaigns under way.

In order for a country to revalue they have to send a letter of intent to the IMF setting out their wishes. Then they have 30 days to carry out these actions. The GOI have done this before as short a time ago as January but the CBI did not carry out the reval.........Maybe this time will be different.
Considering the current value of the dollar, it needs to be a lot higher.

Iraqi Police continue to improve safety in Baghdad neighborhood
    Tuesday, 17 April 2007

Two Iraqi policemen, from the Juaifer Police Station, staff a checkpoint in Baghdad’s Salhiya neighborhood. Photo by U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Elisandro Diaz, Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq Public Affairs.BAGHDAD — Iraqi Police continue to improve security in the Al-Karkh district here Friday.
“Our mission is to investigate crimes and respond to emergencies,” said Iraqi Police Capt. Majid, deputy commander of the Juaifer Police Station, which is responsible for the Salhiya neighborhood.

Majid had pointed out that the Salhiya neighborhood is an area composed of Shia and Sunni residents, which borders the Tigris River and contains Haifa Street and attributes the change in the area’s crime patterns, over the last few months, to several factors beginning with increased patrols.

“Our police conduct many patrols in cars and on foot throughout the neighborhood,” he said. “We have several vehicle checkpoints and a patrol in the market.”

The neighborhood is safer because of improved law enforcement measures. Also, the Iraqi Police in the area routinely works with the Iraqi Army.

“The Iraqi Army will provide escort [security] for our police and work side-by-side at checkpoints,” said Majid. “We used to have up to three to four murders a day, but since Fardh Al-Qanoon started, murder and attacks have decreased tremendously.”

While security and crime investigation remain positive factors, being community leaders and building relationships with local residents during patrols has also helped the Iraqi Police gain a foothold in the neighborhood.

“Children and adults come out to greet the police and seem happy they are in their neighborhoods,” said U.S. Army 1st Lt. Elizabeth Zerwick, a Police Transition Team advisor who is helping the Juafer Police Station. “The people will flag down the police when they drive through their areas.”

However much the Iraqi police station has improved, they still face challenges.

Many Iraqi policemen have left the station because they fear for their families lives while others have simply been fired, said Majid. However, most of the 115 policemen who make up the force have several years experience in the field and are making a difference in the neighborhood.

In spite of challenges, Majid remains hopeful for the police station and envisioned new vehicles, more weapons and more manpower to build his workforce to continue making the Salhiya neighborhood safe.

“This police station helps Iraq because it helps make it safe for people to live here,” said Majid.
