The Iraqi Stock Exchange is soon expected to abandon the 15-year old manual trading system and start using the new electronic trading system for which it contracted Swedish company OMX, reported Al-Hayat. OMX has implemented similar systems in more than 30 Arab and international markets.


The new system is expected to categorically boost trading and to meet the ambitions of one million Iraqi citizens who actively trade shares of listed companies, said Taleb Al-Tabatabaei, President of the market’s Board of Trustees.

Speaking to Al-Hayat, he added that the new trading system coincides with the market authority’s decision to allow non-Iraqis to trade. This policy decision will take effect from the first of June according to investment law number 13 for the year 2006. Everyone hopes this law will help overcome obstacles that are keeping Arab and Foreign investment from expanding in Iraq.

“Allowing non-Iraqis to trade is a step on the right track after the market had lost a lot of value last year,” Al-Tabatabaei said.

He explained that trading will increase dramatically and that trading sessions will increase from two per week (as is the case now) to ten sessions (two per day). This will have a significant impact on the entire investment sector in Iraq, he said.

Computer company IBM has provided training to engineers, employees, and brokers in the Jordanian capital Amman on electronic trading, central deposit, in addition to internal connection with broker offices.
