Meanhile, in another development, a joint British-Iraqi force shot dead the commander of the Shia Mahdi Army militia in the main southern city of Basra yesterday, police and the British military said. “He has been killed, we didn’t kill him, the Iraqi special operations forces killed him,” British spokesman Major David Gell said, adding that 100 British troops were involved in the operation.
The local police force, which has been heavily infiltrated by the Mahdi Army, said that it was British troops who killed Osama Abu Qader.
“He was killed by the British together with two of his aides,” said a police officer in the city. An official of the movement of Shiite radical leader Muqtada Al Sadr, which runs the Mahdi Army, also blamed British troops.
"The British forces surrounded Abu Qader, who was driving his car with four others," the official said from the movement’s headquarters in the Shia holy city of Najaf. The official confirmed that Abu Qader was the Mahdi Army’s commander in Basra but added that he had recently been suspended due to his involvement in clashes with the rival Fadhila party.
Sadr supporters in Basra reported a tense situation in the port city with large numbers of armed militiamen taking to the streets.

Baghdad, may 26, (VOI)- The U.S. army said on Saturday a suspected leader of a secret cell was arrested and five gunmen were killed during a raid in the Shiite Sadr City, eastern Baghdad.

"Iraqi and Coalition Forces detained one suspected terrorist cell leader and killed at least five terrorists Saturday morning during raids in Sadr City," the U.S. army said in a statement received by the independent news agency voices of Iraq (VOI).

The statement added "the individual detained during the raid is believed to be the suspected leader in a secret cell terrorist network known for facilitating the transport of weapons and explosively formed penetrators, or EFPs, from Iran to Iraq, as well as bringing militants from Iraq to Iran for terrorist training."

The U.S. forces also killed at least five during the raid after nine vehicles tried to block the way of the combined force when they were departing the target area, the statement also said.
The army said U.S. choppers engaged during the clashes with the gunmen riding the nine vehicles.
Earlier on Saturday, an eyewitness told VOI "U.S. choppers dropped bombs on back streets and houses near to the petrol station in section 55 of Sadr City."
He added "there were casualties due to the raid and ambulances rushed to the location."
Another eyewitness said "a number of civilian cars were burnt while local residents were in panic because of the clashes that lasted almost an hour."
Sadr city is the stronghold of the Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's followers. Its population is about 2.5 million according to Iraqi government estimates.
