    Iraq announces new round of bidding in the Dec. 29 Oil

    Iraq: PM urges cooperation to implement SOFA

    Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on Thursday called for cooperation and incessant coordination in order to implement the long-term security pact, also known as the status of forces agreement (SOFA).

    "The forthcoming stage requires continued cooperation and coordination in order to implement SOFA," Maliki said in a statement by his office as received by Aswat al-Iraq.

    "The Iraqi forces are highly prepared today to impose security and the force of law after successes attained in all provinces," the premier said in his statements during a meeting with Admiral Mike Mullen, the Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).

    UN Security Council resolution 1546, issued in June 2004, is regulating the presence of the Multi-National Force (MNF) in Iraq until late 2008, when the international mandate given to foreign troops to intervene in Iraq is due to expire.

    The mandate will be replaced by SOFA, which will be effective as of January 1, 2009.

    "Just like we have cooperated in the stage of facing terrorism, we have to continue cooperating in the stage of reconstruction and encouraging oil and power firms to work in Iraq as well as cultural and scientific domains," said Maliki.

    Mullen, for his part, voiced the United States' keenness on implementing SOFA in association with the Iraqi government, expressing support for the (Iraqi) government and cooperation with it in all fields.

    He also expressed content over security achievements, national reconciliation and rebuilding efforts.

    Iraq's Maliki due in Iran, Turkey next week

    IMF Iraq economy flourished after violence decreased

    Committee on oil & gas Parliamentary welcome decision of OPEC to reduce global production ceiling
