Mullen: US Forces exit from Iraq on track
Admiral Michael Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the withdrawal of US combat forces from Iraq remains “very much on track” despite recent spike in violence.
In an interview with the ABC News, the top US military officer said that US force levels in Iraq would drop to between 35,000 and 50,000 troops by August of 2010.
In the wake of recent suicide bombings which one killed 26 people including three US soldiers while 34 were wounded in a car bomb targeting a US patrol in Mosul, Mullen acknowledged that the country is witnessing a new wave of violence, yet, he noted that the level of violence is similar to the year of 2003 adding that the situation is still fragile.
Mullen’s interview came at a time when attacks are out breaking raising fears that Iraq will burst into violence again after US combat troops depart the cities as scheduled by June 30 and amid withdrawal of all US troops by the end of 2011.
On the regional level, the chairman of the joint chief of Staffs believed that Iran still needs from one to 3 years before it gains the capacity to manufacture nuclear weapons while time is running on diplomacy meant to resolve this issue.
