Obama sets new lines of Iraq-US relations

US President Barack Obama set forth the new lines of US-Iraqi relations affirming that it’s time to build broader bilateral relations. In a joint press conference with Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki at the White House, Obama stressed on both parties willingness to enhance bilateral cooperation.

“We'll move forward with our strategy to responsibly remove all American combat brigades from Iraq by the end of next August and to fulfill our commitment to remove all American troops from Iraq by the end of 2011. The United States and Iraq have known difficult times together. Now both of us agree that the bonds forged between Americans and Iraqis in war can pave the way for progress that can be forged in peace”, Obama said.

Once again, President Obama pushed Al Maliki to move forward with national reconciliation reiterating that Iraq will be safer and more successful if all Iraqis are given the chance to flourish including religious and ethnic groups in the country.

The US President praised as well Iraqi efforts before the United Nations to get rid of sanctions imposed on Iraq in the wake of Saddam Hussein-led invasion to Kuwait in 1990.

“I think it would be a mistake for Iraq to continue to be burdened by the sins of a deposed dictator,” the US leader said, noting that they have committed to strong cooperation with Iraq in order to help the country exit from UN Charter Chapter VII regulations imposed after the Gulf War.

For his part, Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki asserted that “President Obama and the American administration agree with us that Iraq is no longer representing a threat to international peace and security because there is a democracy in Iraq, not a dictatorship”.

Earlier, Prime Minister Al Maliki had urged the United Nations to alleviate sanctions imposed on Iraq. In a visit to the UN in New York, Al Maliki held a meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and the Security Council five permanent countries namely Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States.
