President of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce, Saturday, that Iraq will be held soon to the Federation of GCC Chambers.
Jaafar al-Hamdani said that the meeting of the heads of the Federation of GCC Chambers to be held in the next few days "will change its name to the Federation of Chambers of the Gulf region", adding that Iraq "would be then in the Secretariat of the Council and co-president in his work."
The name has been transferred from the European Union Chambers of Commerce to the Federation of GCC Chambers of the GCC countries after the overthrow of Iraq's membership of the European Union in 1990.
The General Secretariat of the Federation of Chambers of the Gulf Cooperation Council has agreed in principle at its meeting held during the month of March last in Muscat, on the restoration of the Republic of Iraq in the Federation and in the 24 meeting between officials of the Gulf Cooperation Council and the heads of the Federation of Chambers GCC.
The Hamdani that Iraq's return to the Union "gives a significant advantage in the center of global economic and encourages investment companies to come to the country," indicating that many of the conventions "held in the period preceding the introduction of Iraq contributed to several associations including the Federation of Chambers of Commerce of the Islamic and the Arab Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry".
And stated that he was "the formation of approximately 12 of the Iraqi trade with countries as diverse", noting that the Federation of Iraqi Chambers of Commerce had "entered a trading partner for many chambers of commerce, including German, Indonesian and Chinese as well as a group of Arab Chambers of Commerce."
The idea of establishing a federation of chambers of commerce, industry and agriculture in the Gulf Arab countries with similar economic circumstances after the growing sense of the need to reaffirm the bonds of brotherhood and unity of purpose and determination and the support of Gulf economic cooperation steps.
Through the initial meetings and contacts made between the chambers of commerce, industry and agriculture and their unions in the Gulf Arab states, was held the first Economic Development Conference of the Chambers of the Arabian Gulf in the city of Jeddah - Saudi Arabia, in the period between 16 - 20 October 1976 to discuss ways of economic cooperation among the people of the Arabian Gulf and the role that can be played by the private sector in this area. Have participated in this conference associations and chambers of the Gulf Arab states in each of the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait and the Republic of Iraq.
The result of discussions in the Conference on the issuance of a number of decisions and recommendations came in the forefront of the Union of Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture for Arab countries to be based in the Gulf city of Dammam, Saudi Arabia, and the formation of a committee of directors of associations and chambers of members of the Conference to draft the Statute of the Union to be presented to the Second Conference to be held in Kuwait .

In the wake of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait on August 1990 was dropped membership of the Republic of Iraq, and edit the name of the Federation to the Federation of Chambers of the GCC countries.

Asiacell: What is the Iraqi Government's Stance on these Indicators?
With the Iraqi government moving ahead in activating the fourth m.obile operator project, Iraq is leading the list of the most competitive Arab cellular markets according to a report published by the Arab Advisors Group on the Cellular Competition Intensity Index for this year.
The Arab Advisors Group Cellular Competition Intensity Index measured the level of competition in the Arab world’s cellular markets for 2009, indicating that Iraq got 91.0%, ranking first and replacing Jordan which was the most competitive market in the 2007 and 2008 indexes.
Commenting on the report, Dr. Diar Ahmed, CEO of Asiacell, said: "We are proud of the level of competitiveness that the sector has reached in Iraq, which is a prerequisite for the advancement of the sector and first and foremost for servicing the Iraqi citizens and providing them with the best services at the best prices. The question I would like to raise here is regarding the government's stance on these indicators and the numbers that show that the cellular market in Iraq has all the necessary elements to elevate and follow the developments that are happening within the sector at the international level. The report underscores the fact that the problems the sector is facing will not be solved by licensing a new operator but by increasing government's cooperation to ensure fair competition and the opportunity for existing operators to put forward solutions and implement them." Dr. Ahmed referred to the example of the government preventing companies to invest in the infrastructure of the sector by installing fiber optic networks, which prevents citizens from their right to clear and uninterrupted calls.
The report indicates that the increased competitiveness of the Iraqi market in comparison to other markets can be attributed to a number of factors, the most important of which is the existence of four operators in Iraq in addition to the existing corporate offers that are available, 3G services and competitive international services.
It is worth mentioning that the Arab Advisors Group devised the Cellular Competition Intensity Index in order to rate and properly assess the intensity level of competition in the m.obile market as part of a comparison that involved 19 countries in the Arab World. The Index takes into account a number of factors that include the number of licensed and expected m.obile operators; the number of working operators; the market share of different operators; number of current prepaid plans; number of current postpaid plans; the availability of corporate offers; the availability of 3G services; and the availability of operational International Long Distance (ILD) competition.

UPDATE 1 - Gulf Keystone says finds further oil in Kurdistan Well
London-listed oil and gas explorer Gulf Keystone Petroleum Ltd said on Tuesday it found further oil at the Shaikan-1 exploration well in Iraq's Kurdish region, and that it raised its oil-in-place estimate.
Gulf Keystone, focused on Algeria and Northern Iraq, said drilling has now reached a depth of 1,710 meters and has encountered an oil column in excess of 170 meters within the Sargelu, Alan and Mus formations.
"This new data provides Gulf Keystone with grounds for a revised range of oil-in-place volumes of between 1.5 and 3.0 billion barrels for the oil encountered, thus far," Gulf Keystone said in a statement.
"Even at this early stage, the commerciality of this discovery is substantially strengthened by our upward revision of the oil-in-place estimate," it said.
The company had earlier planned to drill deeper with the same well into formations that could hold more than 1.5 billion barrels of oil.
Gulf Keystone shares closed at 52.75 pence on Monday on the London Stock Exchange.
