PM calls on BP to do more in Iraq

The Iraqi Premier Nouri al-Maliki on Wednesday called on British Petroleum (BP) to develop its work in Iraq.

This came in a meeting in Baghdad between Maliki and a BP delegation, according to a release issued by Maliki's office.

"The Iraqi government is determined to develop relations with Britain in all levels and in various domains," the release, received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency, quoted Maliki.

"Challenges will not affect us and will not weaken our determination to rebuild Iraq," he said.

Hassan: Oil and gas law of Kurdistan region does not violate constitution

Assem Jihad, the spokesman of Iraqi Oil Ministry said “the Iraqi government put a Chinese oil company in its blacklist because it had signed oil contracts with Kurdistan regional government. This contract is illegal.”

For his part, the member of oil committee MP Baized Hassan said “the stance of the ministry of oil is the same. Previously, the oil minister Hussein al-Shahristani emphasized that KRG contracts are illegal.”

“The oil contracts between KRG and foreign companies were signed according to the oil and gas law of Kurdistan region, which was ratified by the parliament of Kurdistan region and it does not violate the Iraqi constitution. There is no any law for oil contracts in Iraq, there are only the laws of 2003 and earlier”, Hassan added.

Speaking on the contracts and oil export from the region, Hassan said “Kurdistan region has signed contracts with 25 foreign companies. All the companies are going on with their works. When the Iraqi government accepted to export oil from Kurdistan region, then it means that it has accepted the oil contracts of Kurdistan region. The statements on the Medias are only stances against the Kurds.”

Seizing forged currency in western Kirkuk

Brigadier Sarhad Qadir, the head of Kirkuk’s districts police told PUKmedia correspondent “a joint force from the Iraqi army and our forces stormed several villages in al-Zab and Sargaran sub-districts in western Kirkuk on early Thursday August 27th, 2009.”

“The force arrested two persons. One of them is the head of a kidnapping gang, where amounts of ransom were found with him. The force also seized amount of forged currency”, he added.

Qadir mentioned that their operation, which had started early Thursday and lasted until midday, finished without any encounters.

League''s Economic and Social Council holds its 84th session next Thursday :ro_emote: :party:

Economic and Social Council of the League of Arab States holds its 84th session at the level of Arab economy ministers next Thursday to be chaired by Iraq.

The meeting is scheduled to discuss the development of the Council's work and follow up the implementation of resolutions of the Arab Economic Summit tha was held in Kuwait last January.

Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League for Economic Affairs Ambassador Mohammed Bin Ibrahim Al-Tuwaijri said in a statement that preparatory meetings would preceed the upcoming session on Saturday, including a meeting of the Social Committee to be followed by a meeting of the Economic Committee on Sunday and Monday.

He added that a meeting of the Economic and Social Council at the level of senior officials would be held on Tuesday and Wednesday to be followed by the ministerial council meeting next Thursday.

Al-Tuwaijri pointed out that a meeting of a Council Committee groupng eight countries will also be held to discuss implementation of resolutions of the Arab Economic Summit that was held in Kuwait.

BP wins Rumaila field oil license round

Iraq Prime Minister Nuri Al Malki met with a delegation from British Petroleum Company (BP) which won oil license round over Rumaila field held by oil Ministry.

Al Maliki stressed out the importance of British companies’ work in Iraq namely construction companies.

BP Chief E.xecutive Tony Hayward said that his company’s contract with Iraq will help boosting bilateral relations and will constitute an incentive for others British companies to work in Iraq and contribute to reconstruction process.

Serbia signs 100-million-dollar arms deal with Iraq

Serbia has signed a 100-million-dollar arms contract with Iraq, Belgrade newspapers said Friday, describing the contract as the country's largest export deal of the year, dpa reported.

"The contract will employ all six Serbian military industry factories ... and rehauling facilities, some 6,000 people," the Blic newspaper quoted a statement by Defence Minister Dragan Sutanovac sas saying.

No details of the contract, which Blic and radio B92 said was signed Thursday, were revealed. Sutanovac visited Baghdad in early August to sign a defence cooperation agreement.

Iraqi-Syrian relations to further escalation

Relations between Iraq and Syria will not improve until Syria hands suspects thought to have plotted recent bombings in Baghdad who are present currently in Damascus, Iraqi Cabinet spokesman Ali Al Dabbagh said.

“Our relations with Syria have reached a crossroads of whether they choose to have good relations with Iraq, or whether they choose to protect persons who attack Iraq,” Al Dabbagh noted.

On several occasions, Iraq has presented Syria with a list of people it says have plotted attacks in Iraq, he explained.

“The Iraq government has asked for a long time that these people be handed over. The list was given a few times during bilateral security committees but we always received evasive answers. Iraq will not accept this kind of situation”, Ali Al Dabbagh added.

Iraq has said it will ask the United Nations to intervene and will use its remaining relations with Syria to try to ensure that the suspects are handed over, Dabbagh said.

“We are moving on an international level to let the people know that crimes and genocide are launched from countries in the region,” he added. “The international community must support Iraq to stop those crimes.”

Iraqi Deputy Foreign Minister Labid Abbawi denied any boycott between Iraq and Syria noting that summoning Iraqi Ambassador to Syria is a normal procedure mainly if there were some issues that need to be discussed with Iraq Ambassadors. Hence, Iraqi Ambassador to Syria was summoned for consultations and to discuss recent developments according to the ministerial council decision and in accordance with international diplomatic conventions.

US State Department spokesman Ian Kelly called on Wednesday upon Iraq and Syria to pursue dialogue after they recalled their envoys.

"We believe that as a general principle that diplomatic dialogue is the best way to address the concerns of both parties," Kelly told reporters.
