ECONOMIC REHABILITATION AND THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY

American University of Iraq to be established in Sulaymaniyah

(MENAFN) Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister revealed plans to establish a new university with the name of the American University of Iraq (AUI-S) to be located in the Kurdish city of Sulaymaniyah, Newsweek International reported.

It's worth mentioning that the local Sulaymaniyah government donated nearly 162 hectares of land for the project. The official also raised about $15.2 million in start-up capital from private donors.

The official stated that construction work will begin next March and is expected to take nearly 18 months to finish. In the meantime, first batch of students can start their classes next year in rented offices not far from the future campus.

A former U.S adviser to the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education said that the all the courses will be taught in English as in the other five American Universities around the world.

He added that language lessons will be supplemented by Western philosophical and political teachings, including the Federalist Papers and other founding documents of American democracy.

State of emergency extended in Iraq 34 minutes ago

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The Iraqi parliament voted Monday to extend the country's state of emergency for 30 more days.

ADVERTISEMENT

The state of emergency has been renewed every month since first being authorized in November 2004.

It grants security forces greater powers and affects the entire country apart from the autonomous Kurdish region in the north.

The measure allows for a nighttime curfew and gives the government extra powers to make arrests without warrants and carry out police and military operations.
