Thats a GREAT WALL in the DESERT
Great wall to seal off Iraq - World - smh.com.au
Great wall to seal off Iraq
Email Print Normal font Large font Harry de Quetteville
October 8, 2006
SAUDI Arabia plans to build a 900-kilometre, $700 million high-tech fence to seal off its troubled northern neighbour Iraq.
The barrier, which will snake across the long desert frontier between the two countries, is due to be completed in 2008. If built in Australia, the fence would easily cover the distance between Sydney and Melbourne.
Once complete, it will revolutionise security on a border where currently the best weapons in the fight against terrorists are 100 sniffer-dog teams.
"The feeling in Saudi is that Iraq is way out of control with no possibility of stability," said Nawaf Obaid, director of Saudi Arabia's National Security Assessment Project. "The urgency now is to get that border sealed - physically sealed," Outwardly the great desert wall will appear mundane, with two metal barriers running 100 metres apart, lined with barbed wire at the base and top.
On the Iraqi side, alarms will notify patrols if an intruder attempts to scale or cut through the fence. Between the two fences will be yet more barbed wire, piled in a tall pyramid.
But its effectiveness will rely on its more sophisticated or hidden countermeasures. Under the baking sand will be buried sensor cables relaying a silent alarm to monitoring posts at regular intervals along the border. At the posts, face-recognition software will process pictures relayed from cameras, which will also be able to operate at night.
Behind the line of the fence, command and control centres with heliports will provide bases for troops to respond to any alert.
"The costs are not going to be about just building the fence but equipping it too," said Mr Obaid, whose organisation advises the Saudi Government on security affairs.
For Saudi Arabia, terrorists and refugees from the conflict in Iraq are not the only unwelcome intruders.
"We suffer badly from illegal immigration, as well as the smuggling of drugs and weapons and even prostitutes," Mr Obaid said. "It is becoming a major issue."
Saudi Arabia's military is keeping some aspects of the fence under wraps. One source said the project was being kept so secret that military officials from Centcom, America's central command responsible for Iraq, have been told they cannot inspect the site on "national security" grounds.
Even spy satellites will not be able to unravel the fence's secrets. The source speculated the reason for the secrecy might be automated weapons systems attached to the fence that could fire on suspected intruders.
Mr Obaid said: "The fence is a fresh sign that key allies of the United States in the Middle East are resigned to worsening violence and the possible break-up of Iraq, where American intelligence agencies said this week that the continuing conflict fuelled global terrorism."
For Saudi Arabia, whose nationals have been accused of playing a key role in the Iraq insurgency, the deterioration in its northern neighbour is a security nightmare.
Saudi officials are worried about so-called "blowback", in which Saudi insurgents in Iraq bring jihad back to the streets of Riyadh and Jeddah.
But they are mostly concerned that an Iraqi civil war would send a wave of refugees south, unsettling the kingdom's Shia minority in its oil-producing east.
Maybe they can build a wall between the US and Mexico too!

Interesting,
Exactly right, so obvious we all see it, yet they don't, another obvious reason is most on cabinet are illiterates. With the knowledge all of us have on the issues, we could go in and have it all resolved in weeks, not years, so who wants to volunteer? LOL
Good luck to all, Mike

Interesting point of view
I saw this at that other place.
As of now, there is just over 6 billion, thats right billion american dollars of iraq dinar value, in circulation. Is this not mere peanuts in the big picture of life. Think about it 6 billion is 1/10 of Bill Gates wealth. So in order for us to believe that the value of the Dinar will remain the same.
Someone like Mr. Gates could buy and control all of the Dinar with just 1/10 of his wealth. simple logic would tell you the Iraq leaders will never let this happen. I no longer consider myself a yeasayer, but an investor with a golden future. Correct me if I am wrong!

Terrorists, militias are working to destroy Iraq - PM
BAGHDAD, Oct 7 (KUNA) -- Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki said Saturday that terrorists, militias and the ignorant were working to destroy the country, pledging at the same time to carry on the rebuilding process of the troubled Sunni province of al-Anbar.
Al-Maliki's remarks came in a speech he delivered before the tribal conference of al-Anbar. "Dialogue and dealing with tangible evidence was the pedestal for national interest," he added.
"Al-Anbar province was living a marvelous epic, presenting a living example that we were all proud of, despite terrorist desperate attempts to pull it back into sectarian war," al-Maliki added in a statement.
Al-Maliki said that national reconciliation plans were the true means to bypass the security crisis of Iraq. He added that the holy month of Ramadan witnessed a plea to illicit Iraqi blood'.
The Iraqi top official determined three axis to rise up with al-Anbar security state of affairs. These axis were an agreement on a local government that would represent all parties, releasing fund for rebuilding al-Anbar and assigning national figures in security bodies. (end) ahh.

This training aims to establish appropriate anti-money laundering policies and procedures, roles and responsibilities, and official reporting channels."

DC Dinner Party
Evaluating rumors and those who kindly bring them to this forum. Since the distribution of the new IQDs there have been many rumors from many sources concerning the rv.
The people who hear the rumors and pass them along may very well get their info from the most inside sources at the very top. The thing to remember is that the initiators of said rumors may be passing along
bogus info. They do this for specific reasons, the most obvious is to cloud the issue with so much mis-information that when things are really going down people will not know what to think. When the "real" rumors hit the streets people won't act on them as they have heard it all before with out results.
So, just because someone posts a rumor that does not pan out
A. the person may still have legit contacts and B. the person probably sincerely believes the info. and is not necessarily yanking our chains
I personally am very interested in these rumors- because with as much news that is so kindly brought together for us we are better able than most to evaluate said rumors and determine for ourselves if we should go max out our credit cards to buy a few more million Dinar.
I was at a dinner party in D.C. (I grew up in Arl. VA) and I was talking to a gentlemen who was blabbing about something he had overheard Colin Powell talking about. I thought to myself, when they want something "leaked" all they have to do is make sure this loud mouth is in the room.
Finally, we are all in this together and we are all interested in seeing peace and prosperity prevail in Iraq, in the US, at our homes and here on this forum. So let us be peaceful and feel the prosperity of all the wonderful information and insight and news posted here. The observer effects the observed and we can set an example for others.
Thanks to everyone for the information and insight you bring and remember we are all very smart, insightfull and shrewd people for having recognized a great opportunity and invested in IQD's.
Peace,
Michael
