A common GCC currency will initially be pegged to the US dollar although the peg may be reviewed later, Bahrain's central bank said, reiterating the position of other regional central banks.
The six GCC countries, all with currencies pegged to the dollar, are working towards monetary union in 2010.
'Two or three years ago it was agreed that we will more or less relate this (single currency) to the dollar, but at a later stage, as we progress with the monetary union, we will ... develop this issue,' Central Bank Governor Rasheed Al Maraj said.
Abdul Rahman Saif, executive director of banking operations at the central bank, reiterated Bahrain's position that it had no plans to diversify its foreign exchange reserves.
Bahrain central bank has repeatedly said it does not plan to shift more of its largely dollar-denominated reserves into euros, although some Gulf central banks are looking to diversify their holdings.
The UAE’s central bank decided this year to convert 10 per cent of its largely dollar-denominated foreign exchange reserves into euros and gold.
The bank is watching for the impact of US monetary policy on the dollar and waiting for a dip in the euro before making the switch, the UAE central bank's governor said in September.
With the US Federal Reserve halting a two-year campaign of monetary tightening in August, markets have become particularly sensitive to any suggestion that central banks, especially those in countries with large current account surpluses, are moving some of their holdings away from dollars into euros.
