Nuclear weapon States must cut arsenals, US and Russia should lead: UN Assembly told
Nuclear weapon States must cut arsenals, US and Russia should lead: UN Assembly told
17 October 2006 – Despite significant reductions in nuclear arsenals, what remains is ample enough to destroy the planet, the head of an independent commission on weapons of mass destruction has warned the General Assembly, calling on nuclear weapon States to reduce their stockpiles and the United States and Russia to take the lead.

Lack of implementation by nuclear-weapon States of their commitments to work toward disarmament has also undermined their moral authority and left non-nuclear-weapon nations feeling frustrated and cheated, Hans Blix, the Chairman of the Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission told the Assembly’s First Committee yesterday.

Had those commitments been kept, negotiations with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and Iran would be less difficult, he added, but said that despite such issues the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) was not on the verge of collapse, although its safeguards needed strengthening.

Mr. Blix, a former UN arms inspector for Iraq and ex-head of the UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), also urged nuclear-weapon States to commit themselves to a policy of no first-use, and in particular for the United States and Russia to take their weapons off hair-trigger alert.

The Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission was established on an initiative by the late Foreign Minister of Sweden, Anna Lindh, acting on a proposal by then UN Under-Secretary-General Jayantha Dhanapala. The Swedish Government invited Mr. Blix to set up and chair the Commission.

Also addressing the First Committee, which covers disarmament and international security issues, was John Barrett, Chairman of the UN Group of Governmental Experts on Verification, and he spoke in relation to all forms of weapons: nuclear, radiological, chemical, biological and conventional.

UNESCO head deplores ‘ferocious and systematic attacks’ on media in Iraq

UNESCO head deplores ‘ferocious and systematic attacks’ on media in Iraq
16 October 2006 – The “ferocious and systematic attacks” on journalists and media outlets in Iraq undermine any attempts to establish democracy in the war-torn country and overcome decades of oppression and violence, the head of the United Nations organization entrusted with defending freedom of the press has warned.

“The international community and the authorities in Iraq must take determined action to support the media in this appalling struggle over freedom of expression, a basic human right that is the cornerstone to all human rights,” UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura said, deploring last week’s assault on Baghdad’s Shaabiya satellite television station, which killed 11 people.

Among the dead was the channel’s General Director, Abdul-Rahim Nasrallah al-Shimari.

“The reconstruction of a democracy and the return to peace and rule of law in a country that has suffered so much violence and oppression over decades depend to a significant extent on the ability of both public service and independent media to carry out their work,” said Mr. Matsuura in the latest of many statements condemning the slaughter of media personnel in Iraq since the United States-led invasion in 2003.

“Improving the safety of the valiant professionals who work in such appalling conditions and at such personal risk must be recognized as a priority.”

He noted that last week’s assault was the second attack on an Iraqi TV station in as many weeks, after a car bomb exploded outside the Al-Rafidain TV station killing two pedestrians and injuring five station employees. Also this month the body of a kidnapped reporter, Azad Muhammad Hussein of Radio Dar Al-Salam, was found, reportedly showing signs of torture.

Since then, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has reported that unidentified gunmen kidnapped the editor-in-chief of the private weekly Nabad Al-Shabab, Ali Kareem, and have demanded $50,000 ransom from the journalist’s family.

Events: Kermanshah to host Iraq Reconstruction Exhibition
Posted on Wednesday, October 18 @ 20:44:07 PDT
    Topic: Events
Iranian tradesmen and industrialists from all over the nation will showcase their products during a four-day exhibition of Iraq’s reconstruction.

The exhibition, to be held in Iran’s western city of Kermanshah, near the nation’s border with Iraq, will showcase Iranian products, in particular, the construction, industrial, petrochemical, agricultural and hygienic products, oil and gas and steel industries, detergents, foodstuffs and a variety of vehicles and machineries
The upcoming exhibition is expected to provide suitable opportunities for Iranian and Iraqi tradesmen to conclude significant agreements as a result of which Iran’s non-oil products exports would be increased to over one billion dollars, noted the chairman of Chamber of Commerce of Kermanshah.

Increased by $150 million, Iran’s export to its neighboring nation hit well over $400 million in the past year, the Persian service of IRNA said here on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, 50 Iraqi authorities as well as some 200 Iraqi businessmen are going to take part in a two-day seminar held on the sidelines of the four-day exhibition. The two countries’ officials will discuss the obstacles and problems facing the trade between the two nations in particular issues related to truck transportation, insurances, long-term visas, cargo transit and the trend in the reconstruction measures.

    Date:
Iraq Reconstruction Exhibition will be held at the Kermanshah permanent fairgrounds from November 5-9, 2006.

It keeps lagging the site, if you have noticed the site loads alot faster now, when the shoutbox is not up and running, but we are looking in to other alternatives, because a shoutbox/chat is something alot of us would like to have on this site!

And btw, sorry for my harsh tone last night regarding some posts in the latest news thread. I think this will be better and alot easier for us to handle when the thread is only called latest on dinar.

    Keep up the good work!

    Thank you
