Iraq interior minister discuss with Sadr ways to end clashes
BAGHDAD, Oct 21 (KUNA) -- Iraqi Interior Minister Jawad al-Bolani discussed on Saturday with Shiite cleric and militia leader Moqtada al-Sadr ways to end the serious clashes between militias and government police forces in a number of cities including Amara, Suwairia, Hindiya and Hashimiyah.
Al-Bolani said after meeting Sadr that they discussed a number what he called "regrettable events" and ways to prepare the forces to contain the flaring situations.
He said that the situation now has changed and is under control.
He pointed to a number of legal measures and other steps that need to be taken after a probe, in addition to the investigations of the ministerial committee.
Government forces' stations were burned in the city of Amara on Thursday and Friday when militiamen claiming nominal loyalty to Sadr retaliated for the police arrest of one of their members.
At least 25 people died including 15 armed men of Sadr and 10 from the Iraqi police. Some 55 others were wounded.
Furthermore, second Lieutenant in Suwaira Ali Naeema said that at least nine armed men were killed and five civilians wounded in armed clashes between Al-Mahdi militias and Iraqi police in central of the city, some 45 kilometers south of Baghdad. (end) mhg.

US officials in Iraq call country''s politicians to abide by Mecca Document
BAGHDAD, Oct 21 (KUNA) -- US Ambassador to Iraqi Zalmay Khalilzad and General George Casey, commander of Multinational Force (MNF), stated Saturday that the Mecca Document must be supported by all Iraqi political leaders.
The two officials called in a joint statement for backing the 10-item document and also stopping the sectarian violence in the country.
The document was an ethical announcement, pointed out Khalilzad and Casey who added that it was time to unite Iraqis.
The Mecca Document called for bridging the gap between Sunni and Shiite Muslims in Iraq and underlined the gravity of the sectarian crimes that were being committed. It also called for safeguarding national and Islamic unity against strife.
Several leaders of Iraqi Sunnis and Shiites signed the agreement in the Muslims' Holy city.
Even though, representatives from the supreme Shiite leader in Iraq Ali Al-Sistani and Shiite leader Moqtada Al-Sadr did not participate in the signing of the document, they agreed to the items which endorses unity among Iraqis. (end) mhg.

Four scenarios to end the nightmare of Iraq
Translated version of http://www.elaph.com/
October 22, 2006
British army patrol in Basra
London : issued Iraqi file, the most important topics covered by the Sunday newspapers published today in Britain. against the backdrop of growing talk about Washington to review its strategy, which has failed to put an end to the growing violence there.
In this context, the newspaper of the "Observer" a special report on Iraq, which has become "America pursues at home." The report started from the idea that "doubts about Iraq began to crystallize months ago with the rise of the number of dead. Last week it reached a pivotal point with the start of the political leaders in Washington and London to think publicly they lettuce Rua war. "
The report of a change in the attitudes and views of the Americans and the war on Iraq where they are for some time that "the dead who fall in the price of Iraq are essential, But now the overwhelming loss is not considered meaningful. "
The report, as shown in the opinion polls for the growing resentment of the Americans when President George Bush's policy in Iraq, which means "that the Democrats are not the only ones who are challenging President Bush on Iraq, but Republican also become fearful that the position of the White House refuses to recognize the reality of the situation in Iraq to deprive them of power."
In its coverage of the proposed exits "of such a policy, which is considered by many today that it turned political poison." talk newspaper on four scenarios or prospects constitute traded proposals "to end the nightmare of Iraq."
The first proposal to divide Iraq into three parts Kurdish in the north, Sunni in the center and Shiite in the south.
The second proposal sought the assistance of regional and call Iran, Syria and Saudi Arabia to enter Iraq.
The third proposal is in the immediate withdrawal of American forces.
Fourth proposal. Resorting to the scheduling of this withdrawal.
In all cases, according to the newspaper. the "difficult for the British government lies in the fact that the results of the American mid-term elections that will determine American policy in Iraq : If Bush did not achieve good result, the early withdrawal is the most prominent prospect, If he disagrees expectations and was able to achieve a good result it may be possible to send more troops to Iraq to try to address the gunmen. "
It adds the "Observer" : "For Britain, the smaller partner in the coalition, It would be without any doubt the new American policy whatsoever. However, such a policy is still not clear, This holds British politicians to buy time until Aware future trend of Bush. "
For its part, spoke of the newspaper "The Independent" on "a mistake, the withdrawal of shame. " it saw in the opening page of the newspaper that "the battle of architecture is not only an example of the depth of the crisis where it is now in Iraq because of the American-British intervention in it. If the British remained in Amarah, they become a target for "the resistance." If they withdrew from the militias loyal to various Shiite factions fighting to control it. "
It adds the "Independent" : our survival or our departure from southern Iraq will cause the blood bath. None of the options are not Balmthali firm evidence to the inappropriateness of the invasion of Iraq from the outset. " Laborer newspaper to what it calls "an example of history" as inevitable, even after the withdrawal of certain limits remain in place, such as Iraq, for domestic political reasons, make matters worse. "
Not far from this context, the newspaper "Sunday Times" that American officials had held secret meetings with the leaders of Iraqi armed groups in Amman, the Jordanian capital. The newspaper reported that it had not issued any details on the talks. However, the Iraqi source close to the negotiations said that the participants met for at least two days.
In the information paper that among the participants, Representatives of the "Islamic Army in Iraq", one of the most prominent Sunni militias and representatives of the American government. According to the newspaper, the source of principal applicant "Islamic Army" was released prisoners detained by the United States in prisons in countries allied to them.
The newspaper said "the talks with the armed year is the additional reference to the American forces in Iraq rethink their tactics. These talks coincide with parallel efforts to persuade the Shiite militias to stop the violence on their part. " In this context, he met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki of Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sadr, who leads the "Mahdi Army", according to the Israeli newspaper.
