Why would they Tiff? You're not doing anything wrong. Nothing to do with them, as long as they're legit. They won't care, be too keen to bite your hands off for them! It'll be very competitive, rather like loans, mortgages etc. It'lll be straight forward enough, just call before, best to phone around, ask them their rates/fees, then make an appointment and get yourself down there being careful not to lose them en route, lol.

    Thumbs up

    Iraq's Risk Level Drops
The EIU (Economist Intelligence Unit) assigns a "grade" to each country that estimates the risk of investing. The reports are done monthly.

Every month, since Sept 2004, Iraq has received an "E".

Here is the March 17th report:

    Short-term risk event

Sectarian attacks could escalate into more regular open confrontations and could spread more widely, thereby making the political process increasingly irrelevant.

    Political risk

Sunni Arab political alienation will continue to grow, compounded by the lack of input and influence that genuinely representative leaders and forces from this community have, as the country sees power concentrated in the Shia and Kurdish oil-producing regions. This risks maintaining, or even increasing, support for the insurgency.

    Economic outlook

Security challenges and infrastructure constraints will inhibit the oil sector’s recovery, leading to real GDP growth of only 1.4% in 2006, before a pick-up in average output leads to real expansion of 5.5% in 2007.

    Financing outlook

Iraq’s financing gap will narrow in 2006 before widening substantially in 2007, in line with trends in the current account. Capital inflows should meet most of the shortfall. IMF data suggest that Iraq’s debt stood at US$113.6bn prior to the first phase of the Paris Club debt write-off in November 2004. The Economist Intelligence Unit expects this to decline to US$68.5bn by end-2007.

On the April 24th report, Iraq moved up to a "D".

    Sovereign risk

Stable: Despite rising foreign exchange reserve levels, Iraq is in little position to service its external debts and is not scheduled to begin doing so until 2008.

    Currency risk

Stable: Although Iraq is liable to be able to maintain the effective peg of the New Iraqi dinar (NID) to the US dollar, the high level of security problems and the economic vulnerability of the country could easily undermine the relative stability of the NID.

    Banking sector risk

Stable: Iraq does not have a developed banking sector and regulation is relatively rudimentary. Furthermore a number of its banks could close and/or merge over the forecast period. The problem of poor asset quality and the recapitalisation of many banks will take a long time to resolve.

I know it doesn't seem like much but, given the pessimism of the EIU towards Iraq, any recognition of improvement from them is something.

Hopefully May's report will reflect the recent government acheivements.

    Talking

Have a read of this thread guys, sounds to me like smaller denoms have been paid to soldiers out there. They have been paid in dollars up to noe but now they're being paid in dinars, another big plus. Not even on the CBI site have they got small denominations, so they're keeping it hush hush. Sgt Rick said he'll scan the notes. This is huge and shows me that a reval is just around the corner. :0)

    BINGO Tony,

The most wonderful aspect of investing in dinar is that it is a private transaction, and as Adam stated, you can take it anywhere you want to exchange, so it is all about how and where you exchange, and if you do it little by little, it remains a private transaction.

    Good luck to all, Mike

Yes, I heard this the other day...that now they are making ten-dinar notes!
THAT's a big difference to the 25K notes...:)

The smallest note on the CBI's site is the 50 dinar note. Could be all being done hush hush. They'll phase out the bigger notes once the reval happens like the 5k, 10k, 25k notes and just have the smaller ones.

Like the sound of this. Reading so many good, positive articles mentioning needing foreign investors, working on the economy, strengthening the economy, increasing the dinar, and with the above and the government passed with the exception of 2 minister posts it all looks good, it really does.

Who's up for a good old drink up?
