Deposed Iraqi president Saddam Hussein stashed a fortune worth more than 1.13 billion Swiss francs ($1.28 billion) in Switzerland, a Swiss newspaper said today.
The business weekly Cash said the hoard included 300 kg (661.4 lbs) of gold bars, which has a market value of Sfr4.5 million ($5.1 million), in an account with the gold refinery Metalor in Neuchatel.
The Swiss National Bank also said Sfr386 million ($435 million) were lodged in Swiss accounts in Iraq's name, Cash reported.
The Bank for International Settlements in Basle said it had frozen Sfr750 million ($845 million) belonging to the former Iraqi regime.
The Metalor gold had been paid in by the former Iraqi ambassador in 1991 when the diplomats shut down the Berne embassy at the start of the Gulf War.

The head of Metalor, Hans-Juerg Schaer confirmed to Cash that the gold was circulating in the refinery's workroom. The firm had informed the Swiss economic ministry, the weekly said.
The newspaper said Metalor's operations remained obscure.
Also unanswered was the question of where the gold came from. Gold stolen from Kuwait at the time of the Iraq invasion in August 1990 was still unaccounted for.
Estimates claim Saddam Hussein stashed billions of Swiss francs-worth of assets around the world.
According to the UN Security Council resolution 1483 of May 22, Iraq's confiscated wealth is to be immediately transferred to fund the country's reconstruction

GENEVA — If Saddam Hussein is indeed orchestrating an anti-American guerrilla campaign from a hideout somewhere in Iraq, he can count on the billions of dollars he stashed away all over the world to finance his hit-and-run operations.
The latest evidence of the fugitive Iraqi ruler’s ability to return to power by covering the costs of the requisite arms acquisitions and operational outlays is the discovery of a cache of gold bars in a Swiss metallurgic firm — $5 million worth ready for meltdown.
It has been “frozen” by Switzerland’s government and the executives of Metalor who are reported to have engaged in illicit business dealings with Saddam’s half brother and finance chief, Barzan e-Tikriti. Several Metalor executives are being questioned by the Swiss police and Mr. e-Tikriti is under interrogation in Baghdad, where he surrendered to the U.S. military authorities.
Swiss law enforcement officials were not able to act against Mr. e-Tikriti during the two decades in which he ran Saddam’s financial network from this international banking center because simultaneously he enjoyed diplomatic immunity as Iraq’s chief delegate to the United Nation’s local headquarters.

I highlighted the Metalor name because curiously enough they are named in the below lawsuit, which in itself is astounding. Look at ALL the defendants in this case!!! I emphasized the above link about "ready for meltdown" because I had another article (can't find it now) that stated that this was an ongoing project with Sadaam and that the company had melted down gold prior to this on many occassions. ----------------

I assume this closure is not related to their website being down for a few days because the website is a simple HTML site with PDF files. It clearly has nothing to do with the banking infrastructure or international money transfer systems. It seems to me the site went down because of poor management, just one look, and you can see amateurs are handling this site.


The CBI was actually down for several days - I believe btwn 18th and the 22nd. Several of the members actually researched who was the registrant of the site ect......Many good detectives.

You must go back randomly around those dates and find the information you are looking for. The picture will start to come more into focus for you.
The Banks are closed for about a week if I recall correctly, for the muslim holiday End of Ramadan in Eid Festival. Coincidentally, thi sis a period of time in which the Road the bank is located on had been closed - possibly to revamp the communication systems (fiber optics perhaps) whatever is used for RTS Real Time transactions. The Iraq war threatens to split the conservative movement. Isolationist conservative commentators, such as Pat Buchanan and Robert Novak, have opposed the war from the beginning. This is not surprising since they have fiercely objected to almost every American military intervention since the end of the Cold War. It is more troubling, however, that conservatives such as William F. Buckley and George Will are now turning against our continued presence in Iraq.

Since the 1950s, conservatives have been defined by their muscular approach to foreign affairs; especially, their willingness to project U.S. military power to advance American interests and ideals. Most conservatives still support the Iraq war, but the voice of dissent is growing. “One can't doubt that the American objective in Iraq has failed,” Mr. Buckley wrote earlier this year.

Another key conservative, Mr. Will, believes that President Bush’s democracy project is a form of quixotic neo-Wilsonianism: republican institutions, he maintains, are unable to take root in the blistering sands of the Middle East. These views are echoed by former neoconservative Francis Fukuyama, author of “The End of History.” These “realist” conservatives argue the U.S. mission in Iraq is doomed to fail because the country does not possess the pre-existing legal culture and political institutions necessary to build a stable, functioning democracy.

Yet these conservative realists are making a fatal mistake.(YOU TELL THEM) They are accepting the media’s half-truths and misinformation campaign.(CAN I GET A AMEN) Cable TV news, the New York Times and the Washington Post are presenting a bleak picture of constant car bombs and suicide attacks. The reality is more complicated—and more heartening.

Since the liberation of Iraq, the country’s economy has been steadily improving. In fact, its growth rates are better than any other Arab nation in the region. There has been a boom in the construction and farming sectors. Small- and medium-sized businesses are proliferating. The country’s oil infrastructure has been almost completely rebuilt and is expected to operate at full capacity by the end of 2006. More than 1.2 million refugees have returned from exile. Iraq’s currency, the dinar, has become solid and stable. During the last year alone, it has gained nearly 20% in value against the U.S. dollar.
In addition, Iraq has the freest and most robust press in the entire Arab and Muslim world. It has more than 100 privately owned newspapers. There are approximately two dozen radio and TV stations. The country has also had two successful general elections: citizens can boast of a voter turnout higher than in many Western countries (including the U.S.). In a referendum held last year, an overwhelming majority of Iraqis approved a new constitution—a constitution that is the most progressive and liberal in the entire Arab Middle East.

The jihadists and Saddam Hussein’s Baathist remnants seek to derail Iraqi self-government by the only means they know: mass murder and mayhem. But Iraq’s fledgling democracy continues to survive.

It is a terrible mistake for conservatives to abandon our Iraqi allies now. A U.S. victory will establish a vibrant, modern democracy in the heart of the Arab world that will serve as an infectious model for the oppressed peoples in the region. A prosperous, democratic Iraq will become a catalyst for reform percolating within the ossified, conservative dictatorships of its neighbors. This change may be messy. In the long-run, however, Arab nations will be modernized. This will create a more stable and secure Middle East and thereby, a more stable and secure world for the United States.

If conservatives abandon the Iraqi people, they will also be rejecting much of the conservative foreign-policy legacy of the past 40 years. They will be returning to the irresponsible isolationism of Herbert Hoover and Robert Taft, who advocated continental realism and U.S. strategic retreat from foreign wars. They will be rejecting the global interventionism of Ronald Reagan which crushed Soviet communism. And if applied properly and diligently again, this kind of interventionism will crush Islamic fascism as well. Conservatives must avoid defeatism and pessimism. Gen. Douglas MacArthur said it best: [COLOR="Red"]“There is no substitute for victory.” [/COLOR](WELL SAID)
