U.S., Iraqi Forces Raid Radical Shiite Stronghold of Sadr City
Wednesday, October 25, 2006
BAGHDAD, Iraq — U.S. and Iraqi forces on Wednesday raided Sadr City, the stronghold of the Shiite militia led by radical anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, but Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki disavowed the operation, saying he had not been consulted and insisting "that it will not be repeated."
The defiant al-Maliki also slammed the top U.S. military and diplomatic representatives in Iraq for their Tuesday press conference, at which they said Iraq needed to set a timetable to curb violence ravaging the country. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad said al-Maliki had agreed.
"I affirm that this government represents the will of the people and no one has the right to impose a timetable on it," al-Maliki said at a news conference.
Tank cannons boomed out over the city five times in rapid succession Wednesday afternoon, and U.S. F-16 jet fighters screamed low overhead as the conflict in Sadr City continued into the day.
Mortar rounds were also launched at the fortified Green Zone where U.S. forces are headquartered, although there was no immediate word on damage or any casualties. U.S. jets and helicopter gunships fired back and heavy clouds of black smoke could be seen rising from the area around Haifa Street, just blocks from the Green Zone that houses the U.S. and British embassies, police said.

You're not off base at all, there are just different ways to skin the cat. It seems the Kurds would recognize this and negotiate their contracts with the oil companies in terms of dollars/euros (anything other than dinar) if the dinar is maintained at its current value. Remember, they used a different currency than the rest of Iraq prior to the NID, and nothing says they HAVE to deal in dinar.

WOW! Came here to give report on the press conference, and a bunch of you already beat me to it.
Basically, American troops are not being pulled out of Iraq anytime soon, as a matter of fact, we may be sending another 50-100,000 troops over there.
We need to stay there until everything we want is accomplished.
Blah, Blah, Blah
We are not forcing timetables on Iraq, but helping them to meet benchmarks.
Maliki is doing a great job.
Oh! Didn't realize Maliki wasn't aware of that we were going to bomb Sadr, guess we will have to work on better communications next time.

so if GW said Maliki is the right guy for the job, is it safe to say at least for now he isn't going anywhere? which would mean all of the laws on the slate to be passed are still a go. right?
The only thing that does worry me is the Kurds, can they branch off on their own again and do all their deals in usd or euro? Doesn't Iraq ultimately WANT to be rich together? and use the dinar.

Exactly Adam,
This is the real issue, and as others have stated, Maliki talks out of both sides of his mouth, and this is not going to be tolerated for much longer. Sure, Bush has to support him openly, but everyone can read between the lines, Maliki continues to put foot in mouth, and will soon meet his maker, just my opinion, but it is time for Kurd's to take over this mess.
Good luck to all, Mike

?
hmm Press conf. did give him a platform for his messge for upcoming votes..
but I did think it was interesting that he did make mention of the oil resources in Iraq and who ever controlled it would have a ground for either promoting terrorist or defeating it.. not exact words but that was the thought...
So in the bigger picture what do you think as far as anything he said affecting a soon to be rv or not?
