Coup against Maliki reported in the making
Iraqi army officers are reportedly planning to stage a military coup with U.S. help to oust the government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

TERRORISM NEWS: Coup against Maliki reported in the making

Cairo-based Iraqi and Arab sources said Monday several officers visited Washington recently for talks with U.S. officials on plans for replacing Maliki's administration by a "national salvation" government with the mission to re-establish security and stability in Iraq.

One Iraqi source told United Press International that the Iraqi army officers' visit to the United States was aimed at coordinating the military coup in case the efforts of Maliki's government to restore order reached a dead end.

He said among the prominent officers were the deputy chief of staff, a Muslim Shiite, the intelligence chief, a Sunni, and the commander of the air force, a Kurd. It is believed the three would constitute the nucleus of the next government after the army takes over power.

The proposed plan, according to the source, stipulates that the new Iraqi army, with the assistance of U.S. forces, will take control of power, suspend the constitution, dissolve parliament and form a new government. The military will also take direct control of the various provinces and the administration after imposing a state of emergency.

An Arab source also told UPI that certain Arab countries were informed of the plan and requested to offer their help in convincing the former leaders of the deposed Baath Party regime residing in their countries to refrain from obstructing the move and stop violence perpetrated by the party in Iraq. In return, they will be invited to participate in the government at a later stage.

Washington is becoming increasingly impatient with the failure of Maliki's government in quelling sectarian violence threatening to plunge Iraq in an all-out civil war.

We were saying how some officials talk out of both sides of there mouth! Isn't this in direct opposition of what Bush just said in his press conference. He didn't know about these visits to Washington? What a facking mess!

Yup, disappointing the economy wasn't mentioned although he did say the dinar was 'relatively stable'. One of these reporters should have asked about the economy.....
Zubaidi:Monetary value of the Iraqi dinar must revert to the previous level, or at least to acceptable levels as it is in the Iraqi neighboring states.

Shabibi:The bank wants as a means to affect the economic and monetary policy by making the dinar a valuable and powerful.

That's what I meant, after the holiday. Sorry, no assumption made. Apparently, they'll open back up whenever they damn well feel like it!!

Except for the fact that you are talking about U.S. journalist's. They were probably told ahead of time what kind of questions they could ask, and had been told that no questions about the economy were to be brought up. It seems to happen here quite often.

Agreed but it's also in Bush's interests to put across the fact a 'flourishing economy in Iraq' is paramount to their success long term. He needs to 'sell' himself and get your votes.

    4. The International Advisory and Monitoring Board has a meeting scheduled Oct 31 , 2006. When they meet the Iraqi Govt can Request control of the oil proceeds from the IAMB and Resend Resolution 1637 and sign article VIII and trade thier curency internationally.

Sure sounds like something is going on behind closed doors. Remember Annan saying a big announcement was coming, and then nothing came?

I think Mikes focus on end of Oct is important.. remember
Shabibi will be a keynote speaker....at economic conference 10/30 and 10/31
It would be another good time to be able to impress all the big bankers that they are making big steps in the right direction for the ecomony and people.. with a rv announcement? Hope it not a missed opportunity... :)

I agree with you here, except for the fact that most Americans (not all) could care less about the economy in Iraq. They just want to know when the war will be over. Win, or Lose, they want it to be over, and the rest is just details. A "flourishing economy in Iraq" isn't going to mean squat to the average American. Now if he were to talk about a "flourishing economy in the US" he might get some attention.
