Riyadh: Governors of GCC central banks and monetary organisations will meet in the near future to review progress towards establishing a headquarters for the proposed Gulf Monetary Authority.

The banking officials will also discuss other topics pertaining to the introduction of a single Gulf currency by 2010.

In the past, the United Arab Emirates has offered to host the Gulf Monetary Authority's headquarters. Working groups have already been formed and they are engaged in completing technical procedures, in coordination with the central bank heads in the six GCC States.

The Minister Plenipotentiary for Economic Affairs, Nasser Bin Ebrahim Al Qaud who is also head of the Department for Finance and Monetary Integration at the GCC General Secretariat told Gulf News that the GCC states are prepared to make tough decisions with regard to the monetary union. On the table, according to Al Qaud, are issuing of the single currency and details of its technical features, which should be released before the end of the current year.

"The General Secretariat had received several names proposed for the new single currency. There will be a political decision on the name of the currency to be taken by the heads of GCC states following the recommendations of the Gulf finance ministers," he said.

Saudis to Invest Over SR2 Billion in Iraq

Many Saudi businessmen are now getting ready to establish a number of development projects in Iraq after the Iraqi Parliament approved its foreign investment law, reported Al-Eqtisadiah. Iraqi authorities are studying the projects and providing the necessary guarantees to attract investors and attract more Arabian capital.

Thaeer Al Feili, consultant at the Iraqi Ministry of Housing, said that there are three big projects that Saudi investors tend to launch in Iraq. The projects include industrial, housing and agricultural investments with a total investment value estimated at more than SR2.2 billion. Al Feili said that the biggest of these projects is the agricultural project, lead by big Saudi investor.

The project will take large space of land and will improve the Iraqi agricultural production. According to Al Feili, these investments would be the first step toward many Saudi investments coming to Iraq. The General Iraqi Investment Committee has received many investment applications from Arabs and foreigners. Many Saudis applied for investment in Iraq and their requests is under study at the moment and soon it will be done within weeks.

“Saudi investors have great experience in business investment especially investment abroad. They will help in developing the infrastructure of Iraq and their money investment will be a great benefit to Iraq”, said Al Feili. The investment projects will receive many incentives like tax free for ten years and the option to transfer the money abroad.

Bush, Al-Maliki agree to accelerate efforts to build Iraqi security forces

that article was about another country and i believe i mistakingly posted it then realized it was another country. sorry.

and i see some posts in the background here which indicate that i offended someone by my post earlier letting everyone know the rumor from iif was false. i am sorry i offended someone. i didnt realize it until i saw responses to the post as that original post was blocked on my machine. must be someone who offended me some time back and i had put on ignore. hmm, i guess 'what goes around comes around' holds true.
