Int''l Compact with Iraq is a partnership with global community -- UN

Int'l Compact with Iraq is a partnership with global community -- UN

KUWAIT, Oct 31 (KUNA) -- The International Compact with Iraq (ICI) is a partnership with the global community, said Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq Ambassador Ashraf Qazi on Tuesday.

Speaking at the compact's opening of the fifth preparatory meeting, Qazi said "This partnership is premised on a mutual recognition of mutual stake in Iraq's successful implementation of a road map towards the objectives of the compact" that requires developing a plan within a framework of mutual commitments.

While saying that Iraq has a strategic location and the world pays great attention to Iraq's on-goings, he noted the Iraqi government's commitment and efforts to ensure overall peace, security, stability, and development.

He said the compact requires proper mechanisms, joint effort, and mutual commitments, noting that the ICI currently mainly handles social and economic issues, while Iraq would do its part in political and security matters.

"In the coming weeks before the compact event, we will increase our efforts to reach out" to as many partners as possible through scheduling consultations with countries and organizations, developing awareness through a media strategy, devising mechanisms, and deliberating with Iraqi factions, he said.

Qazi stressed "strategically, Iraq's success in its endeavors is indispensable for the attainment of regional and international peace and security."(end) kt.

Kuwait has repeatedly expressed support for Iraqi government -- FM

KUWAIT, Oct 31 (KUNA) -- Kuwait has repeatedly expressed support for Iraqi government to ensure development, peace, and stability, said Kuwait's Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah on Tuesday.

Speaking at the opening of the fifth preparatory meeting for the International Compact with Iraq (ICI), Sheikh Mohammad said Kuwait's hosting of this forum stemmed from its firm and sincere desire to extend assistance and support to the government and people of Iraq who were facing many difficulties.

The ICI, he noted, gives the global community an opportunity to express its solidarity and commitment towards Iraq's current and future stability.

He said "Kuwait places high hopes" on the compact's success in integrating the new Iraq into the world community.

He explained that the four main points that would hasten ICI's implementation could be summed in preparing the compact's final documents before ultimate adoption, utilizing institutional executive mechanisms to supervise programs and investments, specifying major investment needs in Iraq, and creating a liaison office to handle coordination with donor nations.(end) kt.
