We took their wealth in 1990 from $3.27 to .33 and now 1/2 cent. At $1.48, their only getting back to half of pre 1990 figures not to mention inflation. Some times you have to step back to see the whole picture. Hope this helps.

Maybe they held the money so when they sentence Saddam on Sunday they can calm the Sunnis down on Monday with money. Just a thought.

I called IMF awhile back seeking information on Article VIII and what Iraq would need to do to be in compliance. What I was told is that Iraq is in a transitional phase from war and cannot at present accept the obligations of A. VIII I then went further and asked if this was due to a secondary currency, meaning is it because the US dollar and the dinar were both in use as this is a restriction IMF imposes. Again the transitional phase came about only this time it was stated that the present dinar is a transitional instrument for inflationary purposes.

Someone also brought up that the R card distribution could be to initiate a currency swap. I don't buy it though because not everyone gets the card as I'm sure many Iraqis are well off with dinar.
I never posted this because I didn't want to be the bearer of horrible news or IMF scare tactics.


Anyway, I still think we're a go within the next 2 weeks.

And government officials are going to give us sensitive information just because we call.....If it was easy enough to call it would have been posted to an IMF site or somewhere else.......hell, I have been married to my husband for 19 years and he still won't talk about "sensitive" information from when he was in Iraq....he dealt one-on-one with the local Sheiks and he won't spill any sensitive information.....and I sleep with him.....damn army and their values (just kidding) I respect the oath he took and understand his position...just remember those who take oaths or truely are loyal to their government position will do anything to protect the information they are given and will not jeopardize national or international interests just because we ask. Just my opinion.

I don't know - I think giving each citizen what amounts to $14,800 is extremely justified. Think about it: You're a decision-maker in a country that has been struggling for over a decade. The people you serve are starving, down-on-their-luck, and suffering. What better way to finally give your people the step up they so richly deserve than to give them $14,800?

It's not so far-fetched in my mind. There is one of those gulf nations, I can't remember which one (maybe Kuwait? Maybe Saudi?) that I heard that 80% of their population does not work. They simply live off the revenues of the oil that the country sells. If the re-value happens at $1.48, the government of Iraq could simply say, "This is just a start", and more might follow with the passing of the HCL, and subsequent oil deals.

That's simply one viewpoint (mine), and not necessarily the truth (probably isn't), but I believe it makes sense.

I agree with you Charmed... I think we'd get more accurate answers by getting a psychic reading, or a Tarot Card reading. Hmmm, maybe not a bad idea.

I agree and might I add that the purpose of the CBI and what has been doing for the past three years is for the purpose of stabilizing the dinar. They will be joining the GCC in just three short years with a new currency. I don't think it would be the wisest thing to do is go through the enormous time and expense of a reprint of the currency for a second time and then in another three years change it again to the GCC currency. Of course anything is possible but I just don't see that happening!

Besides, it took them 3 months to exchange from the Saddam dinar to the New dinar....These people don't have that kind of time.

Thanks for that Cigarman, some good points there, but last year their 10,000 IQD handout was worth just a few dollars, and this year potentially something around $14,800!

That's a hell of a contrast............

I'd love to see it happen, but something in the back of my mind tells me it won't.
