Default Iraqis get bargain on our wheat

AUSTRALIA'S newest wheat exporter is selling grain to Iraq at a price so low the Iraqis "would have had to have been on drugs not to take it", according to industry sources.
Wheat Australia's deal with Iraq, announced on Tuesday, is for 350,000 tonnes of wheat at $US190 a tonne. The world wheat price is about $US215.

The deal was sealed after intervention by the Howard Government, which is believed to have dispatched its ambassador to Baghdad, Howard Brown, to talks with the Iraqi Grains Board when talks broke down on Sunday.

It is not clear what, if any, incentives were offered but it is known that the basis of the deal - including price, tonnage and delivery - were discussed.

Wheat Australia spokesman Rhys Ainsworth would not discuss "specifics" yesterday.

A wheat trade expert with inside knowledge of the deal, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "The Iraqis would have had to have been on drugs not to take it. It's a very, very good deal for them and not a very good deal for Australian farmers.

"The wheat went at a cheap price because Australia has to start selling wheat some time."

Wheat Australia is a consortium of grain handlers ABB, CBH and Grain Corp. It acquired the wheat for the deal from AWB Ltd, which has been blacklisted by Iraq since it was accused of funnelling money to Saddam Hussein's regime in the lead-up to the 2003 war.

AWB initially agreed to sell the wheat to Wheat Australia at $US190 a tonne 12 weeks ago.

Iraq accepted the price but haggled over other fees. As negotiations dragged on, the world wheat price soared and is now at levels not seen for five years.

AWB then tried to extract a higher price - believed to be $US200 a tonne - from Wheat Australia, a move that almost scuttled the deal.

Rumours circulated yesterday that the Government stepped in and forced AWB to accept a sale at the original, and now heavily discounted, price.

O.K. Now I am lost. What does this mean? Sorry for not getting it, but could you explain?

    Default Iraqi Investments Club

    Greetings,

The fact that international trade is being established is a bullish sign of economic growth. And with Iraq getting a great deal, this adds to their economic bottom line, so it is all good news. The more international trade, the higher the value of dinar will go. (g)

    Good luck to all, Mike

Need I say more.

Neno, Please where might the poll thread be. I bounce around this forum with no direction. How do I visit this thread. I was on this forum until 2:38 last night. The problem with that is that I get so excited I can't sleep.

Thanks, I just voted. No wonder I don't sleep. This keeps me excited all day. I got into PIPS late so I didn't experience this excitement. I am off to the bank to fund my dinar. I will be back and read whats going on.
