Never heard a bad word about him as it goes. Top bloke who's become a good friend through the Dinar. I've had an email from him asking my thoughts on Dinar call options which basically goes as follows.

Not sure if folk out there know how stock or currency options work but basically for a small amount of capital you can bet on where you see the currency going within a specific time period - the downside is that you can lose all your investment , but you can make a lot aswell , for eg.

I sell you a December 15th 2006 call for 1 million Dinars at US$125 /strike US$979 per million - if nothing happens you lose the US$125 , if it falls below $979 you lose all , if it goes to $1200 , you make $221 , a 76.8% return on your investment . I can provide daily buying and selling rates and can purchase and sell these daily . I would be the FIRST dealer WORLDWIDE to offer this service.
Zubaidi:Monetary value of the Iraqi dinar must revert to the previous level, or at least to acceptable levels as it is in the Iraqi neighboring states.

Shabibi:The bank wants as a means to affect the economic and monetary policy by making the dinar a valuable and powerful.

Now waiting for this to peg along with everyone else.

It seems I am always waiting...........

The Agriculture Reconstruction and Development Program for Iraq (ARDI)
Agriculture is Iraq’s second largest value sector, the country’s largest employer, and an effective engine for promoting stability through private sector development, poverty reduction, and food security. The revival of a dynamic, market-driven agricultural sector will strengthen private business, increase income and employment opportunities, and meet the food requirements of the Iraqi people.
Despite Iraq’s strong agricultural heritage, after decades of neglect the country can no longer provide enough wheat – a fundamental staple crop – to satisfy the domestic market. Iraqis currently consume nearly 4 million tons of wheat annually, yet only produce 500,000 tons of milling-quality wheat. More than 85 percent of wheat consumed in Iraq is imported, making it the most costly component of Iraq’s $3 billion Public Distribution System food basket. Although Iraq has the capacity to produce over 2 tons of wheat per hectare the current average is a paltry 800 kilograms per hectare.
NATIONAL WHEAT PROGRAM & PRIVATE SECTOR GROWTH
USAID and the Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) are taking essential steps to increase the domestic production and quality of wheat. Quick-impact programs have delivered thousands of tons of certified wheat seed to Iraqi farmers, stimulating increased production; market reforms have benefited Iraqi farmers and encouraged private sector investment. New varieties of wheat are being introduced, higher caliber seed is being planted, and new cultivation methods are being demonstrated. Already, efforts on select Iraqi farms have doubled wheat production, from 0.8 metric tons per hectare (MT/ha) to between 1.5 and 2.0 MT/ha.
In addition to grain improvement efforts, USAID’s National Wheat Program is developing a system of pesticide management, training farmers in the use of fertilizer, and restoring dilapidated tractors. Future projects will further enhance production meth ods and increase the number of farmers participating in these programs, efforts that will help build capacity and contribute to sustainable growth.
    QUICK-IMPACT EFFORTS
ARDI imported and delivered 4,000 metric tons of high quality, certified Cham-6 wheat seed to MOA, jumpstarting grain production during Iraq’s 2004-05 growing season. This wheat seed was then distributed directly to farmers; a second, smaller amount of seed was used to establish the 44 USAID-sponsored wheat demonstration sites in four gover-norates and to plant 200 hectares for a trial USAID seed multiplication program in northern Iraq. This new seed provided the national seed stock with increased variety and higher quality of wheat. Farmers using the newer seeds will be able to increase wheat yields over the next few harvests.
The higher grade seed also produces a higher quality produce for bread, thus allowing a higher selling price. Cham-6 is a low-protein wheat ideal for bread making. The wheat seed, often used in USAID’s programs, has proven successful in Iraq.
    Developing Market Incentives
Building on the successful distribution of 4,000 metric tons of wheat seed, the MOA has also taken steps to reform wheat sector pricing and encourage investment. In late 2004, drawing on USAID support, the Ministries of Agriculture and Trade agreed to set the price of Grade 1 wheat at $200/ton for the 2005 crop cycle, a 10 percent increase over 2003-04 and double the price of two years ago. As of June 2006, the price of Grade 1 wheat has reached $300/ton. After many years of poor prices, these price increases should provide sufficient incentive for farmers to invest in expanded production and new technologies.

We all by nature here tend to look at Iraq in terms OIL, GAS , etc. Never do we think of the Agricultural potential of the region. I'm glad Mike brought this up again. He brought it up before along time ago.

This region has a huge wealth of water which is like Gold or Oil in the middle east. I use to live and work in Palm Desert, Indio, Coachella valleys of the deserts southwest in California. They actually benefited from the war as Iraq was the biggest producer or Dates in the world. It very well could be again as these plants also benefit from the extreme heat. In the Coachella valley the Date Orchards are beautiful in the early morning. They also planted Grapefruit trees under the Date Palm canopy. These trees and fruit also benefit and actually thrive in extreme heat as long as they get the water. So the potential is for two crops on the same plot of ground.

I love agriculture. I ran the landscape division for the company I worked for before moving here to Sweden. I really miss it. So I'm fascinated by the agricultural business aspect of the region as well. Here in Europe as before , much of the produce comes from Israel. You've got to give the Israelies credit as they really pioneered drip irregation and other desert farming techniques which have brought them a huge source of money. Many of the produce venders here I have noticed are from the middle east. They thrive in business and dealing in commodities. Can you see the potential for an Iraq supplying to other parts of the world as well as Europe , the off season vegtables and fruit ????

Give the Israelies more credit as they developed the 'Anna' apple which is a large yellow green apple for baking or eating. I saw these in the fields of Imperial Valley , California to which I use to communte 2 hours one way to work once a week in my business. I lived in an apple growing area of the San Jacinto mountains. Anyone who knows apples , knows that they need a good freeze to help set buds and fruit. So as I was traveling one day to the valley, I noticed a grove of trees which looked familiar. I just had to stop and ask. Yes they were ripe ' Anna ' apples in late May. The farmer explained to me that they bloom in Early February. Outrageous ! He explained to me their history. Other potential crops for the region are Cotton , Okra, Melons, Onions and perhaps other subtropical crops. All heat loving. Alfalpha is a huge summer crop along with Sudan Grass which from California gets shipped into Cargo Containers and sent to markets such as Japan who have very little land area for growing these things for their own livestock use.

There is big money in out of season crops for the developed nations. Think also of the job potential for the region as not just farmers, but harvesters or pickers, Packing sheds with their employees, truckers , shippers, etc. We've seen big companies who deal in petroleum products looking to invest in the region. Look also at big companies like Dole and others to be looking at the region. These huge giants are all over in other countries of the world looking to farm and ship back to the United States and no doubt Europe and Japan and China. All huge consumer countries who will pay a premium price for good top quality produce. Think of the manufacturers of heavy equipment for construction and agriculture. Also parts and maintenance supplies for these. The potential list goes on and on for Iraq even becoming a consumer nation.

If you look at China's example of change. They had a communist mindset which was dead set against capitolism, but which has evolved gradually over time with their citizens getting a taste for some freedoms and consumers goods which has brought a change in lifestyle. When this happens , there is no way they will want back the old ways. Same for the Iraqi people as their situation changes, they won't tolerate the backward thinking religious funtamentalist who want to send them back to the dark ages.

So thanks Mike for the other potential picture of the new Iraq.

    Cheers, Bluepacific
