Sectarian’ ministries block Public Integrity Commission’s work
‘Sectarian’ ministries block Public Integrity Commission’s work08/06/2006 Source: Azzaman
Iraqi factional groups who are in reality in control of several key Iraqi ministries are hindering work by the Commission on Public Integrity, the commission’s head said.
Radhi Hamza al-Radhi said some officials accused of fraud and craft still think are above the law.
The commission was established to fight corruption which is seen as the main cause for popular discontent and fury.
Corruption is rife in the country and involves almost all sectors of the government.
Radhi said some officials even refuse to fill in forms the commission sends to them.
Under the law, senior Iraqi officials are obliged to declare their assets, financial holdings and property before assuming public office.
But Radhi said about 40% of those covered by the law have yet to fill in these forms.
He cited the ministries of defense, interior and the intelligence organs as examples of bodies whose members have refused to declare their property.
These bodies as well as the Oil Ministry are reported to be among the most corrupt in the country.
Radhi said his commission was keen not to reveal information passed to it to a third party.
“The measures taken by our commission are meant to combat corruption and stop officials from embezzling public property,” he said.
Despite its efforts to introduce some form of transparency in government activities, no official the commission has accused of embezzlement or craft has ever been brought to justice.
The former Defense Minister Hazem al-shaalan who the commission says has embezzled millions of dollars is still at large.
Radhi said politicians interfered in his commission’s activities by blocking court orders or protecting officials accused of corruption from prosecution.

Latest news on the Iraqi dinar
Hi everybody,
This is my first time at posting in this thread, every day I read all the posts from Adster, tiffany , OSW and the rest of you it is just like a "soap" just for your info I am in for approx 1.8 mill dinar, will be happy if it pegs at .20 plus and will certainly meet up with rest of you for the "pegging" party whereever we all decide to go.
Just a quick question to Adster, where do you get your info from?? as to when and how much the peg will be is from official sources, I agree logically, now that the government has been finalised it should be soon and as the Iraqi stock exchange is due to open in a couple of months time it surely must happen by then too.
I cant imagine the violence that goes on daily can effect the situation, we all go through this, especially here in England, look at last July and there was a point not too many years ago when the IRA were blowing us up every other day, also this needs too happen for the Iraqi economy to progress.
Anyway good luck to us all and a prosperous future not to far over the horizon.

I am there! The meeting I am talking about is the one with Pres. Bush and the head of Iraqi (his sp?) I was on a conference call last night and the DR. said that there is a meeting with the heads of these two countries on Monday. (USA and Iraq) He said is was on the news there and on CNN. I did not hear it on CNN or Fox. I was wondering if anyone else listened to that conference call? Neno, I am dancin in the street!
