So that as the dinar value rises, we can take advantage of an increase in value without exchanging to another bankable currency.

For example would Barclays Bank in London or Credit Suisse in Zurich allow us to deposit dinar without exchanging? I would like to hear some opinions on this.

OK guys (and gals), I might be way off base here but I've been thinking about this all day and have come to a conclusion. The more I think about this, the more I think that they will peg to the dollar and not allow it to float. The reason I think this is that I think they will peg high ($1.48+) and keep it there until the security and economy come around. I don't think they will take the chance of the dinar being on the forex and dropping. If they hard peg it, they will do 2 things, first being cost of imports so the Iraqi's can stimulate the economy, second being the secutiry situation. I could be totally off base with my thinking, but that's the way I see it unfolding.

I'm with ya....But I have a question....Let say you are right on the mark with this and it gets in the neighborhood of $1.48, and does not go on the forex, what's our options? Do we buy a ticket to "way down under and then fly to northern Iraq to deal with Iraqi banks? All the banks I have been calling and dealing with say they won't trade until it's on forex. By the way I was in a bank the other day, in good ol Alabama, Regions as a matter of fact, told me they did not deal in dinar yet. Key word here being "yet". But they expected to when it was on forex......just some early morning thoughts to start my day....

Gordon Brown has arrived in Iraq and announced at least £100m in new aid for reconstruction.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer is visiting British troops stationed in the southern city of Basra on his first trip to the country.

He is also meeting Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Barham Salih and being briefed by senior British officers.

After flying in from Kuwait, Mr Brown met soldiers at Basra airbase before going in to talks with Mr Salih.

Addressing the troops, Mr Brown said: "What I have seen here is the tremendous morale of our forces and I want to pay tribute to them for the work they have been doing in often very difficult circumstances.

"What I am saying today is we can provide £100m over the next three years to help with the economic regeneration programme, to give jobs in the area and will continue to offer that security and also to ensure greater prosperity of the area."

The new money will be used for reconstruction aid over the coming three years, according to a Treasury spokesman travelling with the Chancellor.

The UK has already committed £544m by the end of this year as part of a donors' agreement sealed in 2002.

Britain is the first of the donors to draw down all of the money pledged at that stage, and is consequently making a further commitment, according to the spokesman.

Mr Brown is accompanied on the trip by the Chief of Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup, the armed forces' senior officer.

In a statement, Air Chief Marshal Stirrup said: "I am here to see and pay tribute to the important work our forces are doing and to meet Iraqi ministers to discuss the challenges ahead.

"We are committed to supporting the Iraqis in building a democratic nation which brings security and prosperity to its people and plays a full part in the region and the world economy."

BASRA, Nov 18 (Reuters) - British Finance Minister Gordon Brown flew into Iraq for the first time on Saturday to surprise thousands of British troops and boost his credentials for taking over from Prime Minister Tony Blair.

"I am here to see and pay tribute to the important work our forces are doing and to meet with Iraqi ministers to discuss the challenges ahead," Brown told Reuters.

"We are committed to supporting the Iraqis in building a democratic nation which brings security and prosperity to its people and plays a full part in the region and the world economy," he added.

Travelling with Britain's chief of the armed forces Sir Jock Stirrup, Brown will meet with Iraqi deputy prime minister Barham Salih and other senior officials on his visit to the region.

Britain has 7,200 troops in southern Iraq, mostly stationed in and around Basra. But the city remains dangerous with Shi'ite factions battling each other for control and British troops occasionally caught in the middle.

The surprise visit is the latest initiative by Brown to widen his brief beyond his Treasury portfolio as he looks closer than ever to succeeding Blair.

Bowing to pressure from within his own Labour partly because of the unpopularity of the Iraq war, Blair has said he will leave office within a year but he is widely expected to go around May.

Brown is the clear favourite to take over but may still face an uphill election battle against a resurgent opposition Conservative party led by the relatively youthful David Cameron.

An election is still probably some three years away but the ruling Labour party, in power since 1997, is trailing the Conservatives in the polls as anger over the handling of the Iraq war and financial scandals have hit the government.

The government last month announced that troops who serve for six months in Iraq and Afghanistan will receive a tax-free bonus of 2,240 pounds ($4,226) to help bring pay more in line with their U.S. counterparts.

The head of the army, Sir Richard Dannatt, caused a political storm when he said the presence of British troops in Iraq was exacerbating the security situation on the ground and they should be withdrawn soon.
