Iraqi leaders will hold an "urgent" meeting in the next few days to discuss curbs on violence, Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Barham Salih Dubai told Al-Arabiya TV in an interview carried on 17 November.

He gave no further detail but said: "Iraq cannot go on with this level of violence and bloodletting."

"Therefore, it was decided to convene an urgent meeting of political leaders in Iraq over the next few days, to discuss the situation, to reassess government work mechanisms and to adopt appropriate measures."

Salih said participants would include "leaders involved in the political process and leaders who represent the overwhelming majority of the Iraqi people".

He did not confirm outright whether leader of the Association of Muslim Scholars Harith al-Dari would take part in the conference but said:

"National reconciliation attempts are ongoing, including the Arab League initiative in which Shaykh Harith al-Dari and the Association of Muslim scholars had participated."

Salih admitted that the Iraqi government was "paralyzed" because "the extremists impose their control on many sectors and on the people".

"There is a real struggle, a struggle that is getting more serious," Salih said. "This struggle is not a sectarian struggle in the acknowledged sense of the word. It is a power struggle between extremists and moderates."

Salih said: "The political understandings and agreements that were reached had led to the formation of the current government. I am going to be frank and admit that these understandings have come apart and might collapse if we do not tackle the situation quickly."

"We currently need an alliance among the moderates and the wise people from the Sunnis, Shi'is, and Kurds. We must close ranks and not allow the extremists to hijack the political process and dictate their terms on the people as they are doing now," he added.

This is what it really comes down to in my opinion. Yes, some sect. groups have anger towards other sect. groups and vice versa. But it's the extremists that are the top problem. They don't want peace or democracy. They want to destroy the "West" and and have Islam rule for world all in the name of Allah.

The radical extrememists need to be defeated. This is gonna be tough. The clerics preaching this hate have to lose power over the masses of people following them.
A teacher was giving a lesson on the circulation of the blood. Trying to make the matter clearer, she said, "Now, class, if I stood on my head, the blood, as you know, would run into it, and I would turn red in the face... then why is it that while I am standing upright in the ordinary position the blood doesn't run into my feet?"
A little fellow shouted, "Cause your feet ain't empty."

no such thing as a 'market norm' for something as out of the ordinary as the potential of iraq's market.

iraq=more oil than saudi=more revenue at todays prices=richest nation in the world
what is the market norm for the richest nation in the world? what would you judge it off of?? would you expect their currency to be less than a dollar?
    Suz,
I agree, we and Iraq are sitting on more potential than can be discribed, but this thing is far beyond what we consider normal rational. I know we will eventually get there, but in general these folks have a whole different perspective on the world. Many would make a prided based descission, which are ususally what we consider crazy (suicide bombing), than to forgive, move on, florish and prosper. I have many close friends in Kuwait and Iraq, and if you ever discuss things like world politics and religion with them, you would think they were living on another planet. They are convinced that the world is conspiring against them and underneath every rock is a Israelly, plotting to get them. Even folks that have better sense even sympathize with some martyres. I mean they think that Hitler has been resurrected in jewish form. Thus many don't trust enough to forgive and except peace. The iraqi government is stuck in the middle; attempting to do what maybe impossible. They have to balance between the western perspective on what is right and cultural norms that have been in place for a millinium. Sadam was a madman, but that's what kept the vulcano from erupting. Shucks, it took us 200+ years to make the progress we have achieved in the US, and we still have a ways to go. Iraq is try to do it in 3 years? I really hope that things get better, and I think a sizable reval would help but the mindset is so deeply embedded and the propaganda is so pervasive, it's going to take some doing.
