Hello everyone. Again we have a small auction that is consistent with the trend of lowing the exchange rate and removing a small amount of currency from the economy. Is this a "drying up". It is hard to tell from one auction. But eventually this is what we are going to see as they reach their target level. Of course we do not know what that level is.
The question was asked, "what is the role of government in increasing or decreasing the money supply"? In the US, the Gov. expands the money supply everytime we here the words "deficit spending". They spend more than they take in. This has always resulted in inflationary pressure and has been combated by our Fed Reserve using the same interventions to reduce that inflation that is being used by the CBI. Banks reserve requirments, discount rate, and interest rate controls. Thanks to those who have done their homework and compared the CBIs regulations with those of our Federal Reserve system. The GOI has a budget between 30 and 40 billion. As far as I know they have stayed within that budget and deficit spending of their part has not been an issue. So if inflation is a serious problem in Iraq, "what is the cause"? Base on statements by the IMF and my own opinion, the principle cause has been the exchange rate. While the auction results from the past are hard to understand, I think you would see a trend of selling as many dinars into the economy at what has been considered a very undervalued price. There is no logical reason for a country as wealthy as iraq, even with the violence to set an exchange rate of 14 dinars to the US penny. But the positive effect was to generate currency reserves for later on. Now, they have more oil income and the trend has been to remove (1 trillion?) from the economy. A classic economic intervention right out of the textbook. So we will continue to watch. We have one more auction this week and then they have their weekend. I hope they continue to remove money from circulation. This is exactly what we want and if they should remove another trillion out over the next couple of weeks, so be it. The end result will be better for us all including the iraqi people. But I think it is unreasonable that they will go back to such a low exchange rate and "undo" the effects of this intervention we have seen over the last 3 weeks or so. That has to translate into a more expensive rate of exchange. i.e. and RV. Thank You.
