    Red face dated 11/23/06 Microfinance

    Anyone know anything about this?

The Iraq National Microfinance Summit organized by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded IZDIHAR project Nov. 14 to 15 in Erbil attracted more than 100 participants to a discussion of the role of microfinance in economic development and job creation in Iraq.

The audience included Iraqi and international microfinance practitioners, private sector partners, government officials, international financial institutions and USAID representatives.

"The Summit for the first time brings together all the stakeholders to take stock of the industry as it exists today," IZDIHAR Chief of Party Baljit Vohra said at the Summit. "Microfinance, as defined in Iraq, creates employment and self-employment opportunities. We look forward to the deliberations of this summit helping to outline a strategy for this sector that will lay the foundation for a thriving microfinance industry in Iraq."
"Given the unique environment in which microfinance institutions operate in Iraq, there are no real precedents to draw on for guidance. This Summit assisted donors in formulating practical programs with realistic expectations for microfinance in Iraq," USAID's Greg Howell said.

What is microfinance? I already joked (yesterday) that it might have something to do with "the smaller denoms" but I really have no idea...Where are our crack money people? Thanks in advance!

Yeah, I'll take a stab at it.

Microfinance is the practice of giving small LOANS or GRANTS to individuals for entrepeneurial/self employment projects. The last nobel peace prize winner did this very thing in India I think (google it). He worked at a bank and was in the position to loan out very small amounts of money--in some cases just a couple of dollars to would be entrepeneurs. the recipients use the money to start up small businesses....I've heard of some women using it to buy a cell phone, because there is no phone service in their village...she then charges a small fee to use the phone...others may go into farming ventures...the possibilities are endless, and it seems to be a way of bypassing a lot of red tape. The people need just the smallest bit of seed money to start a small business and be self sufficient...microfinancing does this.

I find this all very interesting because the charity I contribute to, Womenforwomen does this very thing. They provide microloans to women in war torn countries. They also provide a year long program of personal rights education, counseling, etc, to help these devastated women get back on their feet. The funny thing is about a week ago I got an email asking if I wanted to sponsor a woman in Iraq!!

I see this as a very good thing...help the average Mohammad get back on his feet...what's good for them is good for us!!
