Zebari envisions lead role for Egypt in collective Arab support of Iraq
CAIRO, Dec 5 (KUNA) -- Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari stressed on Tuesday the need for Arab support of Iraq, calling on Egypt to lead such an action.
"There must be a clear Arab supportive stance towards Iraq, with Egypt taking the lead role," Zebari told reporters following talks with President Hosni Mubarak here.
"There are a number of initiatives regarding Iraq that need special activation because the situation in Iraq requires intensive Arab consultation", he said, noting that a number of Iraqi officials, including President Jalal Talabani, are expected to pay visits to Cairo during the upcoming period.
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was also invited to visit Egypt, he said, adding that there is an Iraqi need for continuous contact with Egypt.
Zebari expressed belief that an Iraqi national conciliation conference with all forces attending would be held in Iraq soon to avert the deterioration on the Iraqi arena.
He said the Iraqi government was exerting relentless efforts to ease the tense situation in Iraq.
On his talks with Mubarak, Zebari said he informed the Egyptian leader of the outcome of al-Maliki's latest talks with US President George Bush which took place in Amman, Jordan last week.
Mubarak was also briefed with the Iraqi diplomatic moves in neighbouring countries, Iran, Syria and Turkey and the Iraqi view over what is going on in Iraq and around it, Zebari went on.
On the Iraqi-Syrian relations, Zebari said there was a new stage in the two countries' relations which appears to be heading towards amity. He said the flags of the two countries would be hoisted anew at each other's emabssy. He said an Iraqi security delegation would be visiting Syria in the near future to launch serious talks on securing the joint security cooperation.
Turning to Iran, he said the complaint of the increasing Iranian role in Iraq was due to the absence of the Arab presence.
He called on the Arab countries not to be hesitant in backing up the Iraqi government as the best guarantee for the pan-Arab security.
Zebari is in Egypt to take part in the meetings of the ten-member Arab committee in charge of the Iraqi file which convenes in Cairo today. The committee groups Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Jordan, Algeria, Sudan and Syria in addition to Iraq and the Arab League's Secretary General Amre Moussa. I spoke with a CPA and was told the thing that determines the amount of "capital gains" tax that you pay is your earned income. The implication is, the lower the actual earned income, the lower the "capital gains" tax, down to a level. I think he told me the minimum was 10%. Hey, even as frustrating as it is sometimes dealing with all the government waste and the lack of desire to pay any tax, I'm okay with that.
