A recent, unheralded development in the region bodes well for Iraq
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
22 June 2006 (The Daily Star)
Recent weeks have seen a quiet but extraordinary development in the Middle East - one that bodes very well for the situation in Iraq, and one which the Bush administration unsurprisingly hasn't seized upon in its effort to portray the Iraq war as having taken a turn for the better. Unlike the highly publicized yet rather ineffective US military operations in the country, this positive development is a diplomatic push - and one in which the United States is not involved: Iraq's neighbors are becoming increasingly engaged in supporting the new Iraqi government.
Iraqis have long acknowledged that they will never be able to create a stable and secure country without the cooperation of their neighbors. Likewise, neighboring states, which had previously been reluctant to cooperate with the Iraqi "occupation government," are realizing that the level of security in Iraq directly influences conditions in their own countries. All countries in the region now openly admit that they have a vested interest in a stable Iraq.
The past weeks have seen a flurry of cooperation and diplomacy among these neighboring states, with foreign ministers of Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iran, Syria and Jordan, as well as Egypt, holding bilateral talks on the issue of Iraq's security. Foreign ministers of all of these states are planning to meet for a ninth ministerial summit on Iraq in July in Tehran, where the ministers are expected to voice strong support for Iraq's political process. This development marks a stark departure from the past, when similar meetings served as little more than a platform for denouncing the US occupation.
This diplomatic development presents an opening for the Iraqi government to wrest control of the political process and the direction of the country from an incompetent US administration, which has often tried to steer the course of events in Iraq in an unrealistic direction. If the Iraqis don't set their own agenda, one that is appropriate to regional realities, the resulting insecurity will stretch from Iraq throughout the region and all the way to Washington. Gaining the support of their neighbors gives the Iraqis the diplomatic muscle to calmly and firmly propose to the US what is in America's best interests, and what the US has long denied - that the Iraqis must set the order of priorities in their own country.

just making a note here of two things to get them on the same page ..
first from the post about the conference call.. claim was that there were 3.2 tril dinar printed.
second from the news story above.. said that current reserves were 11 billion USD..
seems unlikely that both can be accurate?Last edited by clueless; 23-06-2006 at 07:00 AM.

Romania
Hmmm, am a little concerned about this recent visit to Romania.
I hope it's just a coincidence, but Romania are in the process of revaluing their currency by means of zero lopping.

Go away for a day or so and there are 7 pages to go through! lol.
Ok, as you're all doing so well bringing news and articles etc I'll add snippets of news.....
I've not heard anything different as to a reval. Very quiet still, and I believe we're waiting on FI Laws being passed. I heard they have been passed but not yet announced.....

As to other bits, am waiting on confirmation that smaller denominations are out in Iraq.....If so this will be a huge sign of an imminent reval.
Also looks like the Iraqi troops have started taking over the southern provinces, a sign that our boys will start reducing numbers soon.
Have heard too of a dinar dealer who up to this point has said nothing about a reval has said we will have good news soon and he knows about the smaller denominations. Take it for what it is, the buyer says the dealer has been very negative up to now and was surprised by these remarks of positiveness.
Bout it guys, keep up the articles, you really are dinarholics, lol.Zubaidi:Monetary value of the Iraqi dinar must revert to the previous level, or at least to acceptable levels as it is in the Iraqi neighboring states.
Shabibi:The bank wants as a means to affect the economic and monetary policy by making the dinar a valuable and powerful.

Perhaps this is also the cause...?

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The Iraqi government declared a state of emergency in Baghdad Friday, the prime minister's office said, after clashes broke out in a central district.
It also imposed a 2 p.m.-6 a.m. curfew, sending residents of the capital scrambling to get home before it took effect.
The prime minister's office did not immediately give more details about the state of emergency, but it was announced after police said gunmen opened fire on a joint U.S.-Iraqi patrol in the Shwaka district of central Baghdad.
The patrolling forces returned fire and sealed off the area as they clashed with the gunmen, Iraqi army Maj. Ihssan Abdul Hamza said

Greetings,
Well, I missed call last night as it filled up quickly, but hearing what others heard, seems to be the same news, so so close. The final countries with debt remaining are now close to falling in line, and this is a critical issue which Arab countries were holding back on, but now seem to see it is in their best interest to forgive debt given the huge mass of forces building up in Iraq thanks to US and others.
I look back over the last three years and I still cannot beleive we have seen this much progress. If you go back to even one year all the so called experts were still saying there would never be free elections in Iraq, never mind a democracy in place, so overall, we should all be thankful for where we are at the moment in this overall dramatic change in Iraq.
As to the news we have all been waiting on daily, still nothing is being said, other than announcement is forth coming, so it is consistant from all fronts. Of course, much is dependent on aftermath of Zarqawi termination, and this did create a wait and see effect. We saw some good and some bad, the last ditch efforts of insurgents seems obvious, so the next few days should tell us more. Russia falling in line with debt being forgiven is a good sign as they were holdouts along with Arab countries, so the next few days should be good.
Decreasing debt to Russia by 80%
Decreasing Iraq debt to Russia by 80%19/06/2006 Source: Al-Sabah
Iraq has succeeded in decreasing its general foreign debt and had cut 80% of its debt to Russia to reach 800 million dollars out of 13 billion. This came in the frame of the agreement which has been done with Paris club.
An authorized source said that the Iraqi delegate has to Paris club has the greatest effect in cutting 80% of Iraq debt to Russia to activate its role on the international level and achieve the requirements of the agreement. This approach will be used to decrease the general debt and other countries dues.

After all, the international investment issue is where it all begins.
Good luck to all, Mike
