26 June 2006 (Baghdad: Al Sabah newspaper)

The Commercial Bank of Kuwait has opened a major branch in AL Sulaimania, northern Iraq, while the Kuwaiti Western Company will begin operational work from the beginning of next July with respect to the execution of projects in Kurdistan Province.

An authoritative source at the Kurdish Commission for Investment Encouragement has told AL Sabah that the new Kuwaiti branch in the north will play an important role and will serve the whole of Iraq, offering a full range of banking and financial services using the most advanced systems.

The representative of the Commercial Bank, Naeem Shahata, has confirmed that the bank will specialize in deposits, transfers and the granting of special loans to companies and individuals. The Bank will expand its operations to include all banking activities, which will encourage Kuwaiti companies to invest capital in northern Iraq, as the region benefits from a stable security situation.

The Commercial Bank of Kuwait has branches in a number of European countries, America and South Africa.

On a related subject, the AL Sulaimania Chamber of Commerce has concluded 45 trade and economic contracts with the Turkish Chamber of Commerce. Hasan Horami, the Head of the AL Sulaimania Chamber of Commerce, said that these contracts covered the import of goods, agricultural equipment, industrial units, and domestic furniture. He added that a delegation from the AL Sulaimania Chamber of Commerce, made up of 78 prominent businessmen and company executives, had participated in the Ghazientap Trade Fair in Turkey, held specifically for the purpose of Iraqi reconstruction.

26 June 2006 (Baghdad: Al Sabah newspaper)

The Minister of Construction, Bayan Ismael Dazie, has held discussions in Baghdad with senior officials at the US Embassy over ways to support the Ministry in infrastructure projects financed by the US. At the same time, the Minister of Construction and Housing, has held discussions with senior officials at the Ministry to discuss its four-year plans.

She said that Iraq must, over the next period, intensify efforts to execute projects, particularly in the area of building houses, roads and bridges, and she called on the US to offer full support to the Ministry, particularly as Iraq is currently experiencing a total lack of services.

For its part, the US expressed a commitment to offer the support required, particularly in training and the development of specialist knowledge. This would be in addition to supporting housing policies and liaising with world organizations and donor states to obtain the capital necessary for financing these projects.

She confirmed that a comprehensive development plan for building, construction and the activation of the reconstruction operation had been drawn up, with priority being given to the neglected area of encouraging investment .

She called upon the private sector to increase its role in the execution of construction projects and to increase the role of the Housing Fund by building more housing units.
