Kurdistan asked U.S. to set up military base in the region – minister

Erbil, Dec 27, (VOI) – Iraqi Kurdistan has asked the United States to set up a military base in the region, Peshmerga Affairs Minister Sheikh Hussein al-Sheikh Mostafa said on Wednesday.
Another Kurdish official, however, sought to water down the issue saying it was not discussed formally and it needs the approval of the Iraqi parliament.
“We have asked the Americans during several sessions this year to build a U.S. military base in Kurdistan region,” Mostafa told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).
“It is still under discussion between the Kurdish and U.S. sides and we did not reach a clear and official agreement so far,” he added.
He said the reason for building a U.S. base in Kurdistan was “to protect the region from exterior and interior dangers.” He did not elaborate on the dangers.
Meanwhile, the head of foreign relations office in Kurdistan government Falah Mostafa Bakr told VOI the issue of a U.S. base was not discussed officially. Bakr, however, did not say if there were unofficial discussions about the suggested base.
He said such an issue should be done in agreement between the region’s government and the Iraqi government and should get the approval of the Iraqi parliament.
Kurdish legislator Ariz Abdullah said that setting up a U.S. base in Kurdistan did not need the consent of the region’s parliament.
“This is because there is cooperation agreement between the Kurdish leadership and the U.S. army which states that Kurdistan parliament should not necessarily be consulted if a U.S. base was to be set up in the region,” Abdullah said.

Since the founding of the Iraqi state in 1922 and within legal recognition of Iraq. There are legislative and executive powers, legal and governmental institutions, was formed in the light of that government under the Constitution, including the (currency issue)

Who is responsible for this decline? The question before the Ministry of Finance as the Minister stated before on the need for (evaluation Iraqi dinar) and called for the activation to the volume of the American dollar. Will the Iraqi parliament seeks to lay the foundations evaluation of a new monetary unit. Or will the dinar against the dollar circuit? And how low the Iraqi economy to atrophy if the dinar to the spinal column that can not withstand and integrity?

2007 budget estimated at $41 billion

The government has approved the budget for 2007 estimated at $41 billion.

The budget is the biggest in the years since the 2003 U.S. invasion due to skyrocketing oil prices.

Saffa al-Safi, state minister for parliamentary affairs, said the figures for the 2007 budget “are encouraging in comparison with previous budgets.”

One fourth ($10 billion) of the money available for 2007 has been earmarked for development and reconstruction.

Allocations for security are the second largest, totaling $7.5 billion.

Allocations for education have been doubled to $2.6 billion and there will be a 7% increase for the health sector for which $1.8 billion has been earmarked.

Some $5.2 billion will go to provincial municipalities.

If implemented properly, the budget should create 136,000 new jobs, said Safi.

The cabinet has passed the budget to the parliament for approval.

The US mission would switch from building up Iraqi forces and fighting the enemy to providing security for the Iraqi people. The aim would be to stifle the Sunni insurgency while postponing tackling Shia militias and death squads.

cigarman, i think this might be the 1 u mean? there are several articles if u google it about the troops. it mentions 30-50 thousand troops elsewhere in this article, id say they are underexaggerating the numbers for political reasons tho. neno's contact says 80, id say at least that in reality.... maybe 100?

seems to be what we and the iraqi people have been looking for for a (too long...) while. reval, and business without bombs. few harems there already.

id say saddam will hang once they get it (bagdad) locked down too. then the final battle, and the financial solution. either it (reval)happens b4 the 8th when stockmarket opens, or they delay its (stockmarket) opening until the smaller denoms are out and IQD is sittining nice and high (over USD) on the forex. they cannot open until it is reval. think how cheap those bank stocks are. sitting ducks!!!

Indian oil firms eye Iraq field

India's state-run Oil and Natural Gas Corporation and privately-owned Reliance Industries are holding talks with Iraqi authorities on a joint development of the Tuba oilfield in the south of the country, according to The Financial Times.

ONGC and Reliance are expected to hold 30% each in the venture and Algeria's Sonatrach would hold a 40% stake. India is looking to secure energy supplies to maintain its economic growth.
