Instability in Iraq force capital and intellects to migrate
MENAFN - 06/01/2007
(MENAFN) Due to unstable conditions in Iraq, intellects and traders were forced to migrate the war-torn state in search of safety and refuge in neighboring countries such as Syria, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and others, Iraq Directory reported.
As a result, the migration had a grave effect on the national income and the Iraqi market because of the continuing threat faced by those traders in their homeland.
An Iraqi wholesaler said that many traders feel threatened in Iraq and are willing to leave Iraq as soon as possible. Another merchant said he was to shut down his business in Iraq and move to any Arab country until things become better. Many traders and investors agree with that opinion because they still have concerns about the current situation.

Reference please.
Mrs CK,
I enjoy your posts very much and appreciate the time, effort, and diligence you must expend to be able to post such diverse and extensive information as you have always done. I would very much like the reference material/site you from which you took this info please.
The following questions/comments have just popped into my head and are not particularly directed at you, unless of course you have the answers and would like to share. I have done no research on this subject.
Was this information ever brought up during George Bush Senior's campaigning? Very odd if not, seeing as how it was his own father that was accussed of these deeds. Surely there is more to this story. There has to be. Because if someone like Mrs CK, who seems to not have an agenda, can find and distribute this info, surely those in opposition to the Bush's would have used this against them during more vital times than this.
Maybe this info was brought up and then dispelled. Or maybe the American public did not hold GB responsible for his father's sins. I do not know. If it is true, then I salute GB and GW for overcoming and achieving what they have. I sure hope nobody judges me for my family's past. An infamous outlaw and murderer is named as one of my great-uncles. One of my favorite scriptures is Philippians 3:13b ".......but this one thing I do forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before."
If it is not true, or even if it is, I believe another scripture fits here nicely, Isaiah 54:17, "No weapon that is formed against you shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against you in judgement you shall show to be in the wrong. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, says the Lord."
On the defensive and in response to any future posts that may accuse me of hiding behind the Word of God, I say, there's no better place to hide. And yes, just as susie said, I am defending my President. I believe he deserves it.

He added that the ministry will set plans and proposals in cooperation with concerned ministries in order to find solutions for the current situation.

I am thinking that the CBI deleted todays auction because of the news embargo. Also, the CBI does not necessarily follow govt. closings.

New law will attract funds for Iraq rebuild
by Angela Giuffrida on Saturday, 06 January 2007 | Iraq Iraq’s Ministry of Construction and Housing is to push forward measures this year to attract more international contractors to help rebuild the country.
Reconstruction efforts since the US-led war in 2003 have been continuously hampered by violence, alleged corruption and red tape.
But now the construction and housing ministry wants to ease the bureaucracy for international companies with the enforcement of a new law that will mean financial privileges for investors as well as the long-term lease of government-backed construction projects.
The ministry currently has around US $1 billion (IQD1.3 trillion) to put towards building new homes, roads and bridges, and is now seeking to benefit from the professional expertise and modern technology that outside investment could bring for more complex projects.
“$1 billion is not enough for these projects,” said a representative from the Ministry of Construction and Housing.
“For this reason the Iraqi government has adopted a new law for investors allowing them to invest more easily in the country, and we are counting on this law to attract them.
“In order to secure investment in Iraq, the transfer of money on all profits will be free, and we can lease projects for between 20 and 30 years. We are also open to negotiating any ideas with investors – our aim is to attract them because we need them.”
The ministry’s aim over the next three to five years is to get Iraq’s basic infrastructure and housing needs in place. This includes building around 400,000 homes, roads, bridges, modernising Baghdad’s airport and setting up water, power and sewage treatment plants.
“This will make Iraq a big investment market, and our basic infrastructure problems can’t be solved unless we encourage and activate investment.”
According to Dr Alaa Al Tamimi, the former Mayor of Baghdad, the main drive towards attracting more outside investment in the reconstruction effort is to ensure long-term employment opportunities for Iraqis as well as to benefit from modern construction equipment.
“We have plenty of Iraqi contractors and thousands of engineers. But what we need most is the help of international companies to provide machinery and hi-tech resources for the type of work that will need to be done for complex projects like the proposed Metro Baghdad, such as underground digging equipment,” he said.
Al Tamimi added that Iraq needs to move forward quickly with its reconstruction effort despite the continued insurgency that has affected contractors working in the country since the war ended.
“I cannot say the situation is safe; yes we have political problems, but in the foundation of society there is no real violence. We now need to create a mechanism to push things forward, because I don’t think it’s a good idea to just sit back and wait.”

Iraq eyes foreign contractor benefits
by Angela Giuffrida on Sunday, 07 January 2007 | Iraq Iraq’s Ministry of Construction and Housing is to push forward measures to attract more international contractors to help rebuild the country.

Government has to make sure new ministers are efficient – legislator
By Adel Fakher
Baghdad, Jan 7, (VOI) – A member of the Iraqi parliament urged on Sunday Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to verify the CVs of nominees to join the government as ministers in light of the expected reshuffle so as to make sure posts are filled by efficient ministers.
The incumbent government "was formed hastily because much time was taken in negotiations between Maliki, the head of the government, and the political blocs represented inside the parliament," Wa'il Abd al-Latif, a deputy for Iyad Allawi's National Iraqi List, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).
Judge Abd al-Latif said that the change "would include 10-12 ministers representing Iraq's political spectrum."
He said the cabinet reshuffle "must be settled this month," noting the security ministers, like the defense and interior, should be given more chances to cope with the new security plan, which will be strongly supported by the multinational forces.
Abd al-Latif said "there is a large financial budget prepared for the current year 2007 and it needs efficient ministers, governors and local council chiefs to invest these funds for the people's good."
