Parliament-Quorum
Iraqi parliament convenes informally, still lacking quorum
By Santa Michael
Baghdad, Jan 10, (VOI) – Iraqi legislators held an informal meeting on Wednesday for lack of quorum to discuss statements made by head of the Sunni Iraqi Accordance Front during a conference held in Turkey in December 2006 to lend support to the Iraqi Sunnis.
Most legislators objected the statements made by Dr. Adnan al-Dulaimi, head of the Iraqi Accordance Front, during a conference held in Turkey in support of the Iraqi Sunnis.
Lawmaker Saad al-Barazanji, of Kurdistan Coalition, who called upon parliament members to be careful about making statements said “we made a decision to demand the Iraqi government to inform the Turkish ambassador to Baghdad of the parliamentarians’ protest against organizing such a conference in Turkey, and to listen to al-Dulaimi on the statements attributed to him.”
“If the alleged statements were true, al-Dulaimi should offer an apology” al-Barazanji added.
Turkey played a host to a conference to lend support to the Iraqi Sunni people where al-Dulaimi allegedly made statements that received with criticism from Shiite lawmakers. The conference was held in Istanbul on December 13.
Parliament has lacked quorum for some four weeks because a large number of members are traveling abroad. Members of the Sadrist bloc have also been boycotting the house.
On Tuesday, the parliament discussed the general 2007 budget after it was sent by the government to the parliament presidency panel.
In order to maintain a smooth course of sessions, the parliament decided in December to deduct 500,000 dinars (about $340) from the monthly allocations of legislators for each day of absence without a valid excuse.
Each Iraqi parliamentarian gets a total of 17 million dinars ($12,000) monthly.
The parliament also threatened to publish the names of the often-absent members in the media."As long as we live in this world, we are bound to encounter problems. If, at such times, we lose hope and become discouraged, we diminish our ability to face difficulties. If, on the other hand, we remember that it is not just ourselves but also everyone who has to undergo suffering, this more realistic perspective will increase our determination and capacity to overcome troubles." Baghdad / Justice : A deputy in the parliament yesterday that the price of the Iraqi dinar will continue to rise against the dollar to reach a level high by mid-year. He expected the deputy United Iraqi Alliance list Hassan Al-Sunaid during a parliamentary session yesterday that up to the Iraqi dinar exchange rate of 1200 dinars to the dollar at mid-year, while the price of one dollar hit 1480 IQD in last November. Al-Sunaid's statement came during a session of Parliament to discuss the general budget in Iraq during the year 2007, which was hosted by the Minister of Finance statement Baqir al-Zubaidi, a number of his advisers. It is noteworthy that the Iraqi dinar has been rising gradually and continuously, in the value of exchange against the dollar since the Central Bank of Iraq adopting a new monetary policy to deal with inflation in the 13 last November. He attributed the "causes inflation to the disproportionate rate of the Iraqi dinar with the nominal level of the real" prompted the bank to raise the value of the dinar since November last year to reach during the current January to about 1320 dinars per dollar. The Al-Sunaid expectations yesterday consistently high value of the dinar to 1200 dinars to the dollar amid widespread demand of investors and persons dealing in Iraqi dinars instead of the dollar.
