Iraq, U.S. sign MOU to boost Iraqi agricultural sector
Baghdad, Aug 1, (VOI) – Iraq and the United States on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to exchange expertise and strengthen the agricultural sector in Iraq.
The memorandum was signed by Deputy Prime Minister for services and security affairs Salam al-Zawbaai from the Iraqi side and U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns from the American side.
A cabinet statement quoted Zawbaai as saying the MOU entails supporting agricultural guidance systems and exchanging expertise between Iraqi and U.S. universities.
“It is a big project for joint action and lays the foundations of cooperation bridges between Iraq and the United States of America,” Zawbaai said.
Iraq is mulling exporting farm produce, especially its famed dates and amber rice, to the States and other countries after improving this sector that has been neglected for years.
The statement quoted Johanns as saying the United States was committed to support all sectors and in particular the agricultural sector.
The U.S. agriculture secretary arrived in Baghdad on Tuesday to meet high level Iraqi officials as well as Iraqi agricultural producers.
Johanns is accompanied by representatives from the private sector, academia, and the press.
“Many people are surprised to learn how important the agriculture sector is in Iraq and how much potential it holds,” Johanns was quoted as saying in an official press release.
“I am eager to meet face to face with Iraqi ministers and agricultural producers to strengthen our relationship and intensify our collaboration,” he said.
