Iraq signs pact to sell oil to Jordan
By Dergham Mohammed Ali and Kawthar Abdul-Amir
Baghdad, Aug 15, (VOI) – Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said his country signed an agreement on Tuesday to sell crude oil to Jordan as his Jordanian counterpart said Amman appointed a new ambassador to Baghdad.
“The oil will be transported to Jordan by trucks for the time being with plans to look further to re-opening the oil pipeline between Iraq and Jordanian refineries,” Maliki said at a joint news conference with Jordanian Prime Minister Ma’rouf al-Bakhit.
Maliki described Bakhit’s visit as a positive political move that showed Jordan’s interest in Iraqi affairs.
Iraqi ministers discussed potential deals to import food supplies or oil products from Jordan, Maliki added.
Bakhit said Amman would expel anyone who worked against Iraq on Jordanian soil. He said his country would offer additional facilities, including education, for Iraqis living there.
He also disclosed that a new ambassador arrived with him to take up his post in Baghdad. But he declined to give his name.
Jordan’s former envoy left Iraq after a suicide bomber of Jordanian origin blew up a car bomb in Hilla last year prompting accusations that Amman was behind the attack.

Fuel shortage flourishes black market in Iraq
By Adel Fakher
Baghdad, Aug 15, (VOI) – Iraq may boast of sitting on the world’s second largest proven oil reserves, but in Baghdad a chronic fuel shortage has created a flourishing black market for petrol and is driving motorists to ponder getting rid of their cars.
Under a scorching sun, Iraqi drivers have to queue up for hours outside state fuel stations to fill up their cars.
The long lines could stretch for miles from the early morning till sunset, just before the night curfew begins in Baghdad.
Baghdad taxi drivers resort to street vendors to buy gasoline in the black market just to stay in business.
Dawood Salman, 41, a taxi driver, said: "If I waited in this long line, I might get to the end of the line by sunset or might end up spending the night here."
"I have to buy in the black market to fuel my car and accordingly I have to increase the fare. No one should blame me," added Salman.
The cost of black market gasoline jumped to 1,500 Iraqi Dinars ($1) per liter in August from to 750 Dinars in late June 2006.
The official price is 250 ID per liter of regular gasoline and 350 ID for premium gasoline, but the fuel is often unavailable, forcing most drivers to resort reluctantly to the black market or wait in long lines at gas stations.
Ali Hanoon, 37, driving a minibus that runs on gasoline downtown Baghdad, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI): "We buy gasoline from the black market and thus we are obliged to ask the client for higher fares."
The fuel shortage has resulted in doubling transport fares and further hardened the difficulties facing Iraqis.
"We find ourselves obliged to pay a double fare for transportation. Government officials usually offer no more than words," said Ahmed Hussein, an Iraqi citizen.
Iraqi Oil Ministry, to contain the shortage, formed on Monday a crisis management committee to ease the shortage while the Oil Minister flew to Tehran to discuss importing fuel.
In Baghdad’s neighborhoods, large numbers of cars could be easily seen parked idle outside homes with their owners unable to fill them up.
As need is the mother of invention, taxi driver Ibrahim Atteya, 41, from Baghdad’s Sadr City came up with a creative solution for his idle cab in which it doubles for a small shop.
Atteya uses the top and trunk of his car to display dairy products he gets daily from a wholesale market and sells them to make a living.
Other motorists who fail to make good use of their vehicles have put them up for sale.
Sabah Shaker, 49, says he is selling his car “to kiss the tragedy goodbye forever.”
“I cannot stand the long queues or buy gasoline at sky-high prices and there is no end in sight for the shortage,” Shaker explains his decision.
