Default Bank of Iraq, KSE discuss investment; Omanis pump $20m into KSE

KUWAIT CITY: A financial mediator in the Kuwait Stock Exchange (KSE) said some Omani investors had recently infused cash amounting to $20 million in the non-Kuwaiti companies for the second time this year. “Omani investors decided to infuse cash in these companies after witnessing the corrections made in the KSE especially with the ending of the conflict in Lebanon,” explains the mediator indicating that the Omani investors consider the KSE as one of the most stable stock market in the region.

A delegation from the Bank of Iraq has recently visited the Kuwait Stock Exchange (KSE) to open a dealing account to accommodate some Iraqi investors who are planning to invest in the KSE which is considered as one of the most active stock market in the region. During the visit, the delegation met with one of the Mediators Department officials in addition to a number of mediating companies that the Iraqi investors will deal with in the KSE. Sources said the dealing account of the bank will be activated in a week, paving the way for the Iraqi investors to forward their purchase and selling orders in the market.

Default Jordan expected to sign free trade agreement with Iraq

AMMAN — Jordan and Iraq are in the final stages of discussions over the signing of a free trade agreement, a senior official confirmed on Saturday.

Minister of Industry and Trade Sharif Zu'bi told The Jordan Times that the committees from both countries will meet in Amman shortly to finalise aspects of the agreement, which is aimed at boosting bilateral trade and cooperation.

According to the minister, the trade volume between the two neighbouring countries in 2005 stood at $750 million.

Jordan exports consist of various items of foodstuff, pharmaceutical products, drugs, medical equipment, steel, cement and construction-related materials.

The minister made the remarks following a meeting yesterday with Iraqi Minister of Industry Fawzi Hariri, where he called on Iraq to facilitate the entry of Jordanian engineering and contracting companies to assist with rebuilding efforts.

During the meeting, Zu'bi stressed Jordan's readiness to assist Iraq in efforts to boost its economy, including the creation of qualifying industrial zones and other industry-related ventures.

The minister announced yesterday that work is currently under way to create four new qualifying industrial zones in Jordan at a cost of $80 million.

Iraq struck a deal in mid-August with Jordan to provide 10-30 per cent of the Kingdom's daily oil needs of around 100,000 barrels at preferential rates.

Part of the deal will eventually involve laying a new pipeline across the desert between the two neighbours.

The move is aimed at easing pressure on the Jordanian government, which increased the price of petrol, gas and home heating oil in April by between 12 and 43 per cent in a bid to reduce the budget deficit.

The April price hike was the third in less than a year.

Before the US-led war on Iraq in March 2003, Jordan depended on Iraq for all its oil needs, importing 5.5 million tonnes annually by road, half of it free and the rest at a preferential rates.

Iraq revises oil contracts signed during Saddam's rule -- paper

BAGHDAD, Sep 17 (KUNA) - The Iraqi Oil Ministry will revise contracts signed with a Russian oil company during the rule of the defunct regime of Saddam Hussein, Al-Sabah paper, the government mouthpiece said Sunday.

The paper quoted an official source from the Oil Ministry saying the Lukoil Oil Company was scheduled to invest in several oil wells in the southern region of Iraq.

He added that members of Lukoil visited the ministry and expressed their desire to carry on with the deal, pointing out that the ministry will revise all contracts signed during Saddam Hussein's rule, as he used the deals for political interests.

The Iraqi Oil Ministry announced, a few days ago, it will revise a contract signed with a Chinese company to develop an oil well in Wasit province.

Moreover the oil ministry set a plan to construct two pipelines, one for exporting crude oil from Basra to Iran and the other for importing oil derivatives from the Iranian Abadan refinery.

According to the paper, Iran promised to perform a large part of the project in coordination with the Iraqi Oil Ministry and to buy Iraqi crude according to world prices, while Iraq will buy oil derivatives from Iran in accordance with world prices. (end) ahh.
