    Iraq buys 2 used oil tankers for about $58 million

    An Iraqi oil ministry officials says the country has bought two South Korean tankers to be used for importing oil products.

    Youssif al-Timimi, who is in charge of sailors' affairs at the Basra-based state-run Iraqi Oil Tankers Co., says each ship has a 13,000-ton loading capacity.

    Al-Timimi told The Associated Press on Thursday that the two secondhand tankers, named Baghdad and Shatt al-Arab, were bought for about $58 million.

    They will join the country's two oil tankers named after Iraq's main rivers, the Tigris and the Euphrates. Iraq's oil tanker fleet was battered by the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war and by the first Gulf War.

    The ships are currently in the United Arab Emirates and will be in Basra within a week.
