    Investment in iron factory to provide 50,000 job opportunities - Minister

    The Iraqi minister of finance, Baqir al-Zubeidi, said that the investments in Basra’s iron and steel factory will provide 50,000 job opportunities.

    This came during his meeting with the U.S. assistant secretary of defense for economic affairs and a delegation comprised of representatives of South Korean companies, according to a statement released by the ministry and received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

    The factory is expected to produce more than 300 million tons of iron in its first stage, the statement quoted the minister as saying.

    Finance minister takes on banking cooperation with Czech official

    The Iraqi minister of finance has discussed with the Czech minister of industry the possibility of establishing an Iraqi-Czech bank in an attempt to boost banking cooperation between the two countries.

    “During his meeting with the Czech minister of industry, Martin Riman, who is currently leading an industrial and trade delegation on a visit to Iraq, Minister Baqir al-Zubeidi stressed that Iraq opens the door to all friend countries to exchange experience and to build strong economic relations in the fields of finance, industry and trade…,” according to a statement published on the ministry’s official web site.

    The Iraqi official has indicated that Czech companies will be offered all facilities to operate in Iraq.

    The delegation included several Czech officials, including the ministers of trade, an under-secretary of state in the Defense Ministry and a number of directors, according to the statement.

    CBI dollar sales slump to 60 million

    The Central Bank of Iraq’s (CBI) dollar sales went down to reach $60 million in its daily auction on Sunday, compared to $135.475 million during the previous session.

    “The demand hit $1 million in cash, covered at an exchange rate of 1,183 Iraqi dinars per dollar, and 59 million in foreign transfers outside the country, covered at an exchange rate of 1,173 Iraqi dinars per dollar,” according to a CBI news bulletin received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

    None of the 18 banks that participated in today’s session offered to sell dollars.

    Minister underlines British investments in Iraq

    Iraqi Finance Minister Baqer Jabr al-Zubaydi on Sunday stressed the importance of British companies’ accession to the Iraqi market for investment in the sectors of energy and projects of water, roads and construction of hospitals, hotels and housing compounds, according to a ministry release.

    The government “needs to create as many job opportunities as it can in a country where unemployment hits 20%,” the release quoted Zubaydi in statements after a meeting with Baroness Emma Nicholson of Winterbourne, a member of the British House of Lords.

    He said that Iraq’s government and private banking sectors are receiving good attention from the finance ministry and seeking to attain the highest benefit from training courses held by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund for workers in those sectors.

    “The advancement of these sectors should help upgrade the country’s banking status, which would positively affect investment,” Zubaydi added.

    The minister’s meeting with Baroness Nicholson was attended by Industry Minister Fawzi Hariri, Central Bank of Iraq (CBI) Governor Sannan al-Shibi, Iraqi National Investment Commission (INIC) Sami al-Aaraji and a host of British and Iraqi businessmen.

    Senior Economist calls for new political dinar exchange

    Urged the professor of economic theory at the University of Baghdad, a rich Khazraji the central bank to develop a new policy to determine the exchange rate of the dinar against the dollar in the long run.

    The Khazraji in an interview with on the sidelines of an economic forum organized by the Iraqi Institute for economic reform, that the state is losing thousands of dollars by the policy of the daily dollar auctions.

    However, the economic expert confirmed that the losses generated purchasing power has doubled the volume of expenditure on these auctions.

    For his part, defended a member of the Iraqi Institute for Economic Reform on the contrary jeweler lending policy adopted by the central bank, stressing that the high interest of the Bank's loans contributed to the absorption rates of inflation seen in Iraq, especially in 2007.

    Noureddine Hayali: There is a close political opinions will help to restore Election Law

    MP for the bloc Noureddine Hayali that there is a convergence of views by all political parties to reach a final version on the election law in order to vote on it.

    Barzani and Biden stresses the need to find appropriate solutions to the election law

    The head of Iraq's Kurdistan region Massoud Barzani and Vice President Joe Biden the need to address the law of parliamentary elections.

    Electoral Commission warns of consequences of delay in approval of the electoral system

    UNHCR has warned the Independent Electoral Sunday of the consequences of delay, immediately providing the electoral system which allows them to take action to ensure that the legislative elections scheduled for January 16 next time.
