Abu Dhabi firm in talks to build Iraqi homes mega project
Abu Dhabi-based developer Bloom Properties is reportedly in talks with the Iraqi government to build a huge property development in Karbala.

According to a report in the National, the development has been valued at $18bn – making it the one of the largest property building projects ever announced in Iraq.

“The UAE is leading the pack so far,” Kyle Stelma, managing director of emerging markets at Dunia, told the paper.

    Bloom officials declined to comment.

If the Bloom bid is successful it would become the latest in a series of major developments in Iraq by UAE firms, including Damac Properties, Al Maabar and Bonyan International Investment Group, in recent years.

According to a report by Dunia, Emirati firms have invested $37.7bn (AED138.47bn) in Iraq so far this year, which accounts for almost a quarter of all investments.

Karbala, with Imam Hussein and Hadrat Abbas shrines, is one of the holiest cities for Shiite Muslims.

Pentagon says US troops drawdown not contingent upon Iraq elections

The US Defense Department said on Tuesday that the drawdown of its troops in Iraq is not contingent upon the parliamentary elections taking place or not next January.

"The drawdown in Iraq is contingent of the fact that the president's policy is to have us down to roughly 50,000 troops by the end of next summer. That is what the drawdown in Iraq is contingent upon", said Defense Department spokesperson Geoff Morrell in a press briefing.

"The commander in Iraq would like to keep as high a level of forces as he reasonably can, through the uncertainty of the election period and the transfer-of-power period", he added.

Morrell said regardless of the parliamentary elections, the Pentagon will drawdown troops to 50,000 by the of the summer of 2010 and affirmed that this remains the case unless there is "a presidential decision to change that course".

But he maintained that there is "still plenty of time for these elections to be held" while noting that there is an opportunity for the election law to pass despite all the political differences around it.
