Thousands of former army personnel return to service

Thousands of former army personnel have joined the new Iraqi army, a military source said.

The sources, speaking on behalf of the chiefs of staff, said the latest batch, comprising 1,575 officers and 5,000 soldiers, will be the last to be allowed to enroll in the new army.

So far 20,400 former army personnel have been officially allowed to join the new army.

Former army officers and volunteers willing to serve were asked to report to volunteer centers in 2008.

It is not clear how many presented their applications, but the source said those whose applications were rejected will be added to the list of army veterans or retirees.

The accommodation of former army officers and volunteers in such numbers has raised concern by some political factions. They say the current government was using the measure for election purposes.

Iraqis will go to polls on March 6 in what is seen as a milestone general elections in which eight major political factions are taking part.

The government has denied reports that it was politicizing the return of former army officers.

Ali al-Allaq, a member of the coalition led by Prime Minister Noori al-Maliki, said the accommodation of former officers who served under the former regime of Saddam Hussein “is a national responsibility which Maliki needed to shoulder.”

He said the prime minister felt under obligation “to find a solution for the members of the former army. Their return has nothing to do with the general elections.”
