US general eyes 'months' before Iraq government

The commander of US forces in Iraq on Tuesday predicted it would take "a couple of months" for leaders to form a post-election government but downplayed fears of instability.

General Ray Odierno told US public t.elevision it was too soon to give exact predictions on Iraq's transition as final results have yet to be announced from Sunday's election.

"If they are close it will probably take a little bit longer; if someone has a bigger lead, it might happen a little bit quicker. But I believe we're talking about a couple of months," Odierno told the "PBS Newshour."

Odierno said he had been in close touch with Iraqi authorities about ensuring security after the country's second election since the 2003 US-led invasion.

"Clearly we understand that this is a transition time and transitions are always a time of risk," he said.

"But we have worked very hard with the government of Iraq ... to try to ensure that security will remain," he said. "I believe we will be able to do that through this critical period."

President Barack Obama earlier paid tribute to the "courage and resilience" of Iraqi voters who posted a 62.4 percent turnout despite periodic violence.

Obama has promised to withdraw all American troops from Iraq by the end of next year.

Economic challenges is not an easy wait for the next Iraqi government

economics editor ... To Enkhtlv Kmtabain of the economic that there are different sectors in Iraq are difficult to measure achievements in relation to the Maliki government, and the other is referred to Mendez as a huge amount into account the security situation, the former and the efficiency of related legislation, especially the quality and conversion of the achievements in these areas to measurable goals remain in the limits of controversial issues and the multiple interpretations that are likely to more than one interpretation.

That the next government that Iraqis are waiting to set up economic challenges faced by many has not received due attention and treatment needed by those responsible in the previous Triple, such as weak foreign investment and the deterioration of physical Althtip the housing crisis and unemployment among graduates and other reformist trends all of which require the provision of facilities as possible and laws expressly.

And away from the slogans and demands the impossible, the government is seeking to develop projects leading to a major link in the infrastructure with other countries within the strategy of Iraq to be the growth point and link between the Arab States and other countries in order to serve the comprehensive development ...

Whatever the differing views in the sectors of agriculture, industry and services and housing must be high priorities, progress and clearly touched by the citizens, especially if it affected a lot Maalmna security conditions and the decline in performance to some extent brought Iraq to rely on neighboring countries in strengthening its domestic market and make the remainder of the local static ineffective.

The government should provide an opportunity for private sector participation in the implementation of housing policies and development through the establishment of a new legislative structure of the sector and seek to draw up an investment and real estate tax system and legislative property-related events and a fund to support social housing, supportive of the Housing Fund revenue to the state.

Confronted with these problems we need to develop a vision for the perspectives of economic and social development in Iraq to follow up the implementation of the economic reform process and move towards a balanced social market economy, in order to achieve economic and social development of comprehensive and balanced in all branches of the national economy sagging because of the failure of industry and investment and weak domestic private sector and other related matters.

That taking into account the specificities of Iraq and the economic and social relations are required as the existing economy was suffering from substantial distortions are mainly due to problems related to economic growth has played an economic and financial policies with the previous wars deflationary role in the economy and a decline in investment.

These challenges must be taken a number of important economic measures to resolve the debate on the desirability of whether or not the transition to a market economy and liberalization of foreign trade and issues of the banking system .. and these and other measures will contribute greatly to the open area in front of a large private sector to participate in the process of economic and social development.

So initiation confrontation and recognizing the problems and shortcomings of existing laws and development plans and update the administration in conjunction with the fight against bureaucracy and corruption rampant and others work to remove all of the things that you should not lose sight of the future Iraqi government.
