Stay away from politics, Iraqi army generals warned

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has warned Iraqi army commanders to stay away from politics.

The warning comes amid heightened tensions over the results of the latest general elections in which Maliki lost to his rival Ayad Allawi.

There have been reports that the U.S. might eventually support a military coup if the politicians fail to mend fences and form a national unity government.

“The meddling of the military in political affairs is wrong and constitutes a dangerous prelude which no one can settle but the judiciary,” Maliki said.

Maliki made the remarks as he addressed a meeting the Defense Ministry had arranged for top Iraqi military commanders.

Maliki expressed his displeasure with reports that some military personnel used their ranks and positions to “meddle in the electoral process.”

“It is essential to revise such incidents and events pointing to bias or intervention by military personal in the elections. Those found guilty must be punished,” said the prime minister.
