Firms from Turkey, Holland, England, Syria, Egypt and several other countries are to start work in earnest to develop many of Baghdad’s thoroughfares, according to the city’s mayor, Saber al-Aysawi.

In a statement, Aysawi is reported as saying that the companies, at least 23 of them, will develop the highway linking Baghdad with its international airport along with 50 more major streets.

“The highway to the airport will turn into one of the most beautiful in the world,” Aysawi claimed.

The highway was one of the most fascinating in the Middle East with its trees and rose gardens.

But U.S. invasion troops uprooted the trees which they said the insurgents used them as cover for attacks on their convoys.

For years since the invasion, the highway was thought as one of the most dangerous roads in the world. It is believe to be relatively quiet now.

According to Aysawi, the project to give Baghdad’s main thoroughfares a new facelift will cost up to $200 million.
