Who is worthy of ‘self determination’ in Iraq

Suddenly, the term ‘self-determination’ surfaces in the Iraqi political scene. Personally, I am very much impressed by the term in a country in the midst of a devastating strife.

‘Self-determination’ is a demand many countries have been making in the past few decades. But perhaps Iraqis are among the nations which are in urgent need of it.

For instance, internally displaced Iraqis whose houses are being occupied by armed militias and their leaders are entitled to self-determination.

Iraqi refugees in Syria, Jordan, Egypt and other parts of the world are in a constant struggle for their self-determination.

Hundreds of thousands of former army personnel whose units were disbanded are waiting for self-determination.

Millions of Iraqi orphans, martyrs and their children are looking forward to a decision that will help them determine their fate.

The poverty-stricken Iraqis, who witnessed the embezzlement of billions of dollars (by their leaders and factions), and ended up having not enough to eat, are keen to see the day they are given the right to self-determination.

The prisoners languishing in public and secret jails as well as those run by the Interior Ministry and the Baghdad Military Operations, plead with Almighty, day in day out, for the time they will be given the right to self-determination.

The victims of the havoc wrecked by international and regional intelligence agencies in Iraq are in urgent need of self-determination.

Even those residing in the “Green Zone” – rulers and subjects – are under the constant obsession of self-determination. These are the ones who know, better than any other section of the Iraqi society, the type of ‘self-determination’ that is in store for them.

Allawi says will join Iraq govt if given real power

Former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi said on Friday he will join a new Iraqi government led by Prime Minister Nuri al Maliki if the premier follows through on promises and makes him a genuine partner.

Allawi's Sunni backed Iraqiya bloc won the greatest number of seats in a March parliamentary election but his participation in the new government, which may be formed next week, has been in question.

He said: "Iraqi political powers must share an equal role in making fundamental political decisions." And added: "Authorities must be equal, and distributed fairly."

But Allawi said the participation in a new government of his cross-sectarian Iraqiya bloc, which won 91 seats with heavy support from Iraq's minority Sunnis, was not a certainty.

He added: "We have the desire to be in the coming government. We want to be partners and not (just) contributors."

Iraq is without a new government more than nine months after an election Iraqis hoped would bring stable governance after years of war and economic decline. Maliki was appointed on Nov. 25 to form the government and was given 30 days to pick his ministers.

Allawi, who has warned that any attempt to exclude his Sunni backed bloc from the government could lead to renewed violence, signed on to a November 10 power-sharing agreement between Iraq's Shi'ite, Sunni and Kurdish political factions.

The deal ended an eight month political impasse following a March election that failed to produce a clear winner.

The agreement put Maliki, a Shi'ite, on track for a second term, returned Jalal Talabani, a Kurd, to the presidency and made Sunni lawmaker Osama al Nujaifi speaker of parliament.

Under the accord, Allawi was to head a yet to be created national strategic policies council.

But a day after the pact, Allawi and some members of his Iraqiya bloc walked out of parliament, saying the deal was being violated. Allawi later said he would not take part in the government, declaring power sharing "dead".

Maliki and Allawi met on Tuesday for the first time since they sat side by side in parliament more than a month ago.

Allawi said the two agreed on the formation of the strategic policies council Allawi is to lead. In the past, Maliki had said the council would be an advisory body, but Allawi had sought real power.

He said: "He (Maliki) was clear in his words and right to the point. We hope things will go properly to achieve these issues without any obstacles."

He said: "We don't believe the important issue is how many ministries we will get in the coming government, but rather the partnership that we will share in making decisions on Iraq future."

    Iraqi business elite thrive

Refuge of thousands of Iraqi businessmen to Jordan in the nineties when the country suffered paralysis as a result of U.S. bombing and economic sanctions imposed by the United Nations after the invasion of Kuwait. The dawn of the American invasion of Iraq in 2003, more unrest. And expanded free trade zone in blue on the outskirts of the Jordanian capital Amman after that transformed the kingdom into a safe haven for the commercial activities of the Iraqi construction companies to restaurants, specialized in the provision of the thickness of the covered dish, a traditional Iraqi popular.

And the foundations of many wealthy Iraqis in Jordan, joint ventures with international companies to provide their products and services. And the expansion of some of that rule to manage the commercial activities across the Middle East. Iraqi investors pumping billions of dollars in the Jordanian economy over the past two decades, including Khawam and his brothers and their commercial and industrial activities.

Do not think only a handful of businessmen in the reopening of industries closed after the sanctions imposed on Iraq after its invasion of Kuwait in 1990, which contrasts with the big oil companies that rushed to set up a presence in the country, which lies over some of the largest crude reserves in Almonzera to lack of resources security enjoyed by the major oil companies, the companies owned by the Iraqi families more vulnerable to sectarian and ethnic differences that are still plaguing the country.

Says Nabil Rassam President Nabil Company for Food Industries Company, which turned his family into one of the largest processed meats in the region after two decades of sanctions that hit the company's operations in Baghdad paralyzed that Iraq is still a place fraught with danger for business activities. The painter: there is security and electricity are available, we can do something. It is not easy now to succeed in Iraq. And created a business class of their own Iraqi airspace in the Jordanian capital and spread their mansions in the elite residential areas in Amman.

The land records show that the Iraqis at the top of the list of property buyers from non-Jordanians as they spend more than $ 250 million in the last ten months of the year. Iraqi expatriates and pumping billions of dollars in real estate assets or shares of Jordanian and now hold a large share of bank deposits in the Kingdom and sizes up to 18 billion dinars, or $ 25 billion. But on the other side of Jordanian banks lose ground to their counterparts of Lebanon, which has attracted Iraqi companies hungry for capital to fill the vacuum left by the Iraqi banking sector, which is still largely insulated from global financial markets does not provide a little credit.
