While we're watching the forex and waiting for announcements, I have a few thoughts to share about the whole 'civil war' 'security' and 'stability' issues. During the year I was there, the country went from relative quiet to blowing up in April 2004. We were in a bombed out former Republican Guard base, with only a few hundred soldiers. By the end of the year, there were thousands. There were trailers, with electricity and water. Even though there were times the roads were so dangerous that the military convoys couldn't come through, the civilians kept rolling in. Sometimes the cargo (and their trucks) had bullet holes in them, but it never stopped. I can't tell you how impressive it was to watch a small city built in such a short amount of time under horrible conditions.
It's my opinion that if the laws to be put in place are favorable, nothing will stop the economic progress. Many of the bombings we read about are taking place in large, crowded slum areas. Tragic and sensationalized, but not enough to put a stop to country-wide development.
